What to do...
if you don't think you will have fun, don't go and save your money and time for something you will enjoy- it's supposed to be fun, right?
If it's not going to be fun...do something else that is!

I debated this same thing coming into the xterra Deuces Wild race in AZ. It would have been a 6-7 hour drive for me, and although I paid for the entry I would rather have saved all the gas money and hotel costs for a bigger more meaningful, and fun race. I am glad I didn't go do the race, instead I spent a nice weekend with my gf, and now I have more money for a bigger race coming up (Xterra Worlds in Maui). Although, if it was a championship race like the one in ogden, and not a regional xterra like AZ, I might have had different thoughts. Thankfully, xterra west is only an hour from me. Anyways, just make sure you won't regret not going. Are you sure you cant carpool with some buddies or something?

Skip the race and save the money for something funnerer ;-)
Nothing to it, but to do it
I concur with the consensus. Traveling and race fees are getting expensive. I'm having fun with training and saving money for some new gear... That travel expense could be a new Garmin 405 :)
Racing is just flat out expensive and if you're going solo and aren't pumped then I say skip the race and put in a good weekend of training. Like Tribro said, save the money and buy yourself a new toy. After all, if you're not having fun then its not worth it.

I originally planned that my biggest race of the season would be Mountain Championships in Ogden, Utah, but now I'm not sure if I want to go.
The issue is: I procrastinated on travel plans and all of my friends are booked up. I would have to drive 8 hours there solo, get a hotel for two nights, race and drive back another 8 hours solo. That's a whole lot of money spent and time spent not having fun. I won a free entry, so if I decide not to go I'm not out any money.
I figure if I don't go, I can alter my training to peak for a Winter Park mtb race instead and save the money for a fun 24 hour race or trip to Moab.
What would you do???
