Vineman Iron Distance
Yeah, I did this race, too. Also for me was it the first IM I did, and I'm also happy that I finished. I struggled a lot on the last 30 mi on the bike, and then on the run it ended up being a lot more walking than running., Several times I almost decided to quit, but I knew I would regret that later, so I kept walking or standing :D and I also knew that I had to go all the way to the transition area anyway...
Well, now I've completed an IM and I'm really happy, even though I still have a few problems walking around, looking back at the race, I think it was a good race. The only thing was that they didn't really announce (at least so everyone could hear it), before the first wave should begin the swim. I walked down to the beach as the speaker said 90 seconds to the start.
But a really good event, with a lot of nice people volunteering.
Congratulations on finishing your first IM race, to both of you! One thing I've found is that most IMs have something challenging about them - could be heat, wind, waves, elevation, hills, cold, freezing rain, or whatever. Every now and then you have an IM that goes off on a flawlessly mild day (like this year's IMCDA) but extreme weather is more often the norm than not it seems. So congratulations again on completing a tough event in tough conditions!

This was my first triathlon so I didn't have anything to guage it against. I too thought the run course was a little more then the advertised "rollers", but was happy with my finish time of 14:03 grabbing 11th in my age group. The organizers did a great job, but I agree that the swim start organization was a little scrambled and hectic without any clear direction. Congrats too all of those who were out there tough'n it out under that hot sun.
did the half way back in '01 and that was tough can't imagine doing that course twice especially hated Chalk hill. congrats on your first Iron distance! hope you enjoyed a good wine afterwards
I was playing sherpa for a friend and I directed bikes to hang a left out on the course. I was SO glad I was not doing the race. Not only was it a hot day, it was the only day all month where it was that hot - you guys got robbed! But you did it and if you can do that race you can do just about anything. Congratulations!

Did anybody else out there do this race? It was my first IM, and the run (or walk, in my case) was just ridiculously tough. Not only was the course extremely hilly (as expected), but it was about 98+ degrees and there was zero shade. Don't get me wrong, it was a very well run event, but the weather was just awful. Only 300 out of the 480 or so people who started the race actually finished.
...It was a bit demoralizing for a first IM, but in the end I was just happy to finish.
