Ironman Cozumel
Not to be a Debbie Downer, but the island is small, which means you will be doing lots of laps for the bike course.
But hey, it IS Cozumel! I just want to go there period.

yeah, i know what you mean... it's basically 2 out and back 56 mile loops

But think of the swim!
On the other hand, multiple laps means that your bored family gets to see you more often.
If I'm going to be in the water for 2.4 miles, it sure would be nice to have the beautiful clear water vs some lake or murky ocean water.

Looks like a nice course. The bike looks like two out-and-backs, and the run is two 13.1 mile "loops" up and down the beach. I imagine it is lined with hotels and restaurants. The swim would be sweet! A 'clear' ocean, no wetsuit.

There should be lots of fish to see and get distracted by on the swim. Seeing a barracuda down below might even make you swim faster. The course will definitely be spectator friendly offering 2x the viewing on both the bike and run.
Traveling might be an issue and $$$ since you would want to arrive a few days earlier and it's Thanksgiving that week.

Hey, I was there for 2 weeks in February last year, did the course, I rode the bike loop of 60km on a rented 10-speed. Ran the marathon course - 10k at a time. heh. Swam ALL the beaches. Some points:
It is dead flat, not a hill in sight. The whole island is only a few metres above sea level. The road crosses the island from town heading due East and if there is a wind it will be a tailwind - think lots of PRs! It is a 60k loop so 3 times round is perfect. The run will probably go south on the west side past all the restaurants and shops - good for spectators and business.

Barring storms the water on the west side is clear and warm and beautiful. The run will be on pavement or concrete, hot, humid, could be an out and back but probably a loop for the businesses & spectators, keep them in their seats buying cold beer for 15 or 16 hours!
I love it. Sign me up.

I know, I know. Trust me, I WANNA!!! But if I can't even handle a little jog with Beads here in my own city, I'm probably not quite ready to take on an Ironman next year. Seriously, you have no idea how sad I am. :-( I was truly torn between Louisville and Switzerland with you!
You can always come to the old country and drink beer...I mean, *cheer* on the sideline :)

So if the water is too warm at an IM event (like Cozumel). Does that mean you can't wear a wetsuit or does it mean you can wear one regardless of the temp, but you can't place in your AG or qualify for Kona?

Generally speaking, 82 degrees and up is a no-wetsuit swim.
You'd overheat anyway, plus the salt water provides almost as much buoyancy as a wetsuit, and, no chafing!

And I believe 78 and up is no wetsuit if you want to count for awards and Kona slots. But I'm too lazy to look it up right now.
Man that looks like it could be a cool race to do...
Is registration open for this event? I might do this one.
That look great. The wife would get a beach vacation and I could get in an IM ;-)
Nothing to it, but to do it
When I was a kid we used to go every year and scuba and vacation there it is a great island but I have some done some rides there and man it is pretty boring the good news... the hilliest part is the swim.
It does sound great. Wife would love the vacation aspect of the beach.
On the website it says no wetsuits and it's an "in water" start. Does that mean you have to start in the deep waters and tread or can you stay closer to the beach to conserve energy?
I ask because I am a terrible swimmer looking at IMFL next year (beach start), but this one sounds FUN!
It will be the best swim ever.
I am officially registered. It will be my first IM, but I have more than a year to train for it.
How exciting....
What do you guys think that water temp will be? No wetsuits???
Thanks
-Mat
It will be 75-80 degrees. Probably no wetsuits allowed.

I didn't want you to be the only first timer there, so I signed up this morning.

I haven't seen the actual site of the swim start but you will probably have the option of waiting in shallow water while the more aggressive starters take off. Common sense suggests that all starts as large as an ironman have to be near a shoreline to accommodate the numbers but they can string the start rope across a bay as at IMC, and that lets some people hover in deeper water for the gun.
Personally I think that makes for a less violent start because you can imagine the mass of adrenaline-pumped young men and pros sprinting for the water, legs driving through the shallows, elbows flailing, and the carnage in their wake.!
No, treading water for a few minutes before the gun makes for a more orderly start and probably saves the women from losing teeth too.
The good news is that you have a year to improve your swimming. Work on that shoulder flexibility,

That's exciting. See you there
Being a swimmer I am absolutely stoked about the no wetsuits! It plays a big advantage for me. Cant wait to see some fellow trifuelers there!
First timer myself and I couldn't be more psyched about racing in Cozumel. Curious though as to how people are getting their bikes down there - I've always raced within driving distance and have never had to ship a bike.
YOu can put it on an airplane. I have done it a couple times down there and the bike (for me anyways) has come through unscathed.

Looking for a late season IM, and afraid of getting closed out of Florida and Arizona next year? Woke this morning to find this in my inbox....
