holding a peak
Hey guys, any idea's on how to hold my peak for a week or two? I had set myself up for an HIM last weekend (which went really well) and have an Oly next weekend and a bike race the weekend after. I still feel good with two days recovery and a couple of tempo rides, a couple of moderate runs and a solid but short swim. My understanding is short and some intensity will keep the peak, but wondered what everyone else thought. I figure I will be suffering in the bike race no matter what I do, but would like to have some for Sunday.
Congrats on the HIM!!
Take it easy and do what you planned. Maybe some walks and a massage if you could swing it early in the week and rest up a couple of days before the oly. If the HIM was your 'A' race don't sweat it, and go out and have fun.
Nothing to it, but to do it
Think you are on the money with keeping your training short but intense. This being my first full race season I started with a 70.3 I have been looking to keep my "edge" with careful volume workouts with a semi taper the week before a race keeping (as per coaches workouts) my workouts short (half volume) but just as intense. Also careful balance of A,B and C list pre-race tapers have so far worked fine for me. For instance C list I don't taper and treat it as a workout.
cheers

I think it depends on your fitness level and your age in terms of how long you can "hold" a peak. For most people it is VERY difficult to put out a peak effort 2 weeks in a row. That doesn't mean you can not race back to back weekends, it just means that you probably won't have quite as much juice in the tank for that second event so plan accordingly.

I think you will be more than fine. A typical tri training program has a peak and a race period. You wont gain any fitness during an extended peak, but you wont get slower, expect through the fatigue of racing. I all depends on your recovery ability. I have had 3 events in 4 weeks and actually seen my performance increase for the later events due to the reduction of training hours during the week. Short, fast, and specific workouts are the ticket to keep up your speed.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
