Consuming enough calories during training...
You can eat healthy and get enough calories in, you just have to plan ahead. There are a lot of caloric dense nutritious foods...Organic PB, avocados, meats/proteins, dense multi grain breads, granola, adding EVOO to your meals. Just a few examples.
I had the same problem when I first starting doing HIMs, but after a little research and planning I have my nutrition down pretty well.
Its a burden to eat this much... Try 4,000 a day. The overweight people in my office always make rude comments to me on top of it.
My tips:
Like KitKat said, plan ahead.
Dont buy fat free or lo fat junk. get the full on stuff. Like yogurt and cottage cheese
Eat snacks that are 200 calories or so
You just have to spread it out more. You HAVE to be eating 6 times a day at least.
If you're not 15, its not too hard to eat enough. Bir breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, dinner, evening snack.
I'd suggest some sports nutrition books to guide you. Sports Nutrition for Endurance Athletes is good, as is Nancy Clark's sports Nutrition Guidebook. Eat right, eat often.
Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
I LOVE this sport! Where else can you find a whole thread and how to get MORE calories into a day :)
What do you all think is the best way to consume my calories? For example I burn 1000 cal/ workout day. And my BMR is 2000.
A) Eat 3000 on each workout day, and 2000 on my rest day. or
B) Eat (6*1000+ 7*2000)/7=2857calories everyday.
( in english ----> take an average of calories burned per day over my week. )
I aim to eat what I burn during training and then stay at basal on recovery days...UNLESS I have a high intensity training week. Then I'll usually try to eat a little over on those training days. I think really it depends on what your goals are, ie, fat reduction, fueling for power, or just to maintain.
I think you can pull off as many calories as you want if you pick the right snacks...
1 cup of mixed nuts = 814 calories!!!
1/2 cup Sesame Seeds = 412 calories
1 Avocado = 276 calories
Peanut butter... pineapple (especially juice!)... salad dressing with some healthy oils...
I'm basically making a list of everything I have to AVOID. :)
Peanut butter is my friend... Better yet, try soy nut butter. Most people say it tastes gross, but I think it tastest just like peanut butter and there are about 50 calories per tbsp. Add honey, and hopefully you got a long workout coming up. :)

Okay, so I've been training for a HIM and it seems like I cannot consume enough calories if I eat healthy. According to my HRM I burn on average of 1000 calories per day, and my basal metabolic rate is 2000, so a total of 3000 per day is required. If I eat well ( lots of veggies, fruit, lean protein) I just get full, and cannot shove anymore food down my gullet. Lately, I've been adding sodas, sweets, and McDonalds to my diet to keep me at a constant weight. Anybody else experience this?
