Shimano Electronic shifting is here... thoughts?
very very cool stuff, cant wait learn more after January. If the dura-ace w/o the electronic wasnt already 2x the price of my entire bike i would be interested!
Time flies like an arrow, fruit flies like a banana.
Sometimes my bike is already an automatic! That makes me swear at it sometimes.... ;)

Shifting out of the saddle.....I like it. If I can get it cheap enough, I might put it on my new bike for next year.

Time to start buying lottery tickets again!

Wonder how all that ELECTRONIC stuff would have done at last months IMLP...?

If the electronic fails, will there be the option of using a mechanical backup system to shift?
Yeah, the backup is your finger. Watch out though... those teeth'll getcha!
Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Same issue if you break a cable while riding. Thankfully I havent but I know some people who have.

For $5200*, it better NEVER even make a sound, a creak, a mis-shift, get dirty, and it better buy me breakfast in the morning.
*The article suggested it would be twice the $2,600 DA 7900, which in itself is a huge move up from an 8-piece DA 7800. And, something tells me the purists over at Campy would never dream of such blasphemy.
The article mentions Campy working on a similar design...

The almighty $$$ conquers all apparently. ;-)

It's waterproof:

They rode them in the rain in the TdF... I don't think there were any issues related to water.

They used it in the Tour de France this year... not without glitches, I can't remember who, but someone got stuck in a very wrong gear and had to switch bikes.
Edit: It was Fabian Wegmann... got stuck in top gear.

Sounds cool too bad I can't even afford a real tri-bike and am riding a roadie off e-bay.
Still not exactly positive though on what it really buys me as I tend to shift based on my knowledge of the ride and what gear I should be in and therefore don't make quick needed shifts in general.
Maybe my lottery ticket will come in. Just have to go buy one I guess.
Maybe before long they will mount a navigation system and e-mail server on the handle bars. Call me old-fashioned but I'd prefer to switch my own gears, thank you very much.

It would be more geared (pun intended) toward racing where suddenly accelerations and consequently gear changes are critical. If you can switch gears twice as fast as an opponent or switch gears while loading the pedals then you could gain the necessary advantage to open up some daylight.

They already have the nav systems, but that is a pretty awesome tool. Never fear getting lost again because you have turn by turn directions with you everywhere! Check out the Garmin 705 if you are interested...directed toward everyone but edubb ;-)
cool, not worth the price to me. I'm sure that the price will drop rapidly as time goes along, and maybe when its more reasonable.

Well not quite yet, we have to wait till 2009, but thoughts on the electronic shifting? (see story here: http://www.wired.com/gadgets/miscellaneous/news/2008/07/shimano)
I don't know what I think about it yet... I have mixed feelings at this point
