Dean Karnazes Ultra Marathon Man MOVIE
I was thinking about seeing it last night, but I ran instead ;-)
I read his book and he comes acroos as a little bit selfish and arrogant, but obviously he has ran his miles.
I'm sure it will be out on DVD, then I can catch it.

sounds interesting...do I sense a rant?
I haven't heard about the movie but I did love his book. I'll have to check it out.

somebody's going to crack and tell us why he's such a bad guy. Then I can stop looking around on the internet to find negative stuff on him.
Seriously, I thought his book was great, but I want to know all this stuff that is being held back!

He can run, but he is arrogant, selfish and totally into self promotion
Nothing to it, but to do it
he probly has a picture of himself in his wallet

Google Sam Thompson, who you say?, exactly. No crass commercialism there!

While parts of his book were great, I actually lost a lot of respect for him and his choices reading it. I just saw himself and his endeavors coming before family too much. I could be totally wrong there, but it just didn't leave the best taste in my mouth. I have other ultra heros around... Anton, Andrea, Beads, Glen Redpath, Ted (a trail buddy), etc etc etc
Random thought on him just now... does he have a cause at all? I mean, with all the Lance stuff you can always go to "but look how much he has done for Cancer awareness/research!". With Dean we all know his name, but is there any cause he now stands for other than "anyone can do it because I could"?
He stands for the "Look at my abs, and all my fancy sponsorships!" If I see another picture of him w/ his shirt off I think I'll puke. I'd say his shirt-off appearances are neck and neck w/ those of Mathew McConehadweeb.

while I do agree that it seams like his family gets the short end of the stick, he does sacrifice 4 hours of sleep a night so he can train before they get up and after they go to sleep.
I came into the movie unbiased and it really seems like he is a good guy and doesn't really like the attention. I can't blame him for making a living off of running.

In his book he does mention a few causes he has run for.
Now it does seem that he run for himself and self promote as a job.
It would be cool to something like that but he still is a bit sketchy.

I remember this guy from when Dean K was talking about doing his 50/50/50.
Sam was really doing a selfless thing

well since everyone else is going letsrun-style on deano ill put in my two cents. i enjoyed reading his book a few years ago and thought it was pretty entertaining. however, the more i found out about him the more i dislike him. outside magazine named him "america's greatest runner". are you kidding me?! how could he accept that title? and his 50 in 50 was a giant north face ad. i dunno, i just don't think he's good for the sport of ultrarunning. im sure he has good intentions, but he just comes off as an arrogant turd.
that was the rant we were waiting for ;)
Dean is a "stunt" runner.
His Stunts are all about "Look at me!"
His ideas are never original.
He hears of someone doing something, takes it, and makes look like it was him first.
The "first" to run 300 miles without stopping.
Nope...that was Pam Reed
50/50? Nope...the ever humble Sam T.
Here is the clue that he's a poser...I know of no one in the Ultrarunning community that even mentions his name unless it's in a joke.
I wish he'd go away.
My UR hero? Fred Schumacher. 32 JFK 50 milers and counting and just a wonderful individual.

sorry jtrimom...fixed a spelling mistake and that bumped you.. and THAT was not a rant...you should see my rants...

Couldn't agree more.

Just saw the 50/50/50 documentary about Dean Karnazes...
Did anyone else see it?
Thoughts?
I liked the movie, but got a little motion sick from the jittery camera work. It was very inspirational, and reminded me that I have no excuse to not get out there and run another marathon. It was very emotional actually, as I realized that moving to New York means that I will not be able to run with my mom in her first Half-Marathon as I had planned...
