goal setting for sprint.

I'm very confident in my abilities to be able to finish at a steady pace, but for my first time, should i set a time? I'm not sure about what kind of goal to set. Any tips?

My .02 for your first race skip time and placing goals. tri's are too new to you make the first one about finishing with a smile on your face or at least finishing ;) it will be an educational experience you can worry about breaking the course record on your next attempt. good luck and have fun!

You can check the finish times of the previous year to give you and idea what others in your age group have done. Then set yourself a goal. I wouldn't get too wrapped up in a specific time.
Do your first race to finish and see how you feel. Have fun with it, and smile!

+2 what everone else said. The first one is just about doing it and enjoying it. A good goal would be not to walk. Or to have a run time close to your regular 5k.

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

for my first sprint - i wanted to finish within 2 hours. for my first oly - i am hoping for under 3 hours.

not really sure how i came up with those times, just very round numbers and general goals.

for a first tri, just have fun and finish, likely, you'll get hooked and then the goals seem to pop out of nowhere, first the time goals for the sprint, then bigger and longer races, then more time goals for those...my point, just enjoy your first, you will never forget it!

I made goals for my first tri... mistake... I underestimated the impact of the swim, then went out way too hard on the bike, and had nothing left for the run. Should have focused more on just getting the experience under my belt.

I agree with everyone. Finish the race. Now you have a baseline. Now in your second race you can try to improve.
