Bikram Yoga as a Training Supplement?
I do Bikram 5 times a week usually and just hydrate before and after. Yesterday I lost 7 pounds (usually it's around 5, but was retaining a bit of water this week...) I have noticed no side affects other than the strength and flexability I have gained have helped me a lot.
I also do a hot power (flow) class that helps the upper body strength as well. Just make sure to replentish the fluids.
I do regular Yoga, not Bikram, but I am dying to try it. I just want to comment that doing Yoga really helped strengthen my core in a way nothing else has. After 4 kids, I never thought I'd see my abs again! Before Yoga, I was training hard and in good shape and I was happy with that. After I started doing Yoga, I noticed these odd lines on my stomach. What do you know? It was my top two abdominal muscles. I have a "two-pack!"
Since I am doing my first tri this Sunday, I have nothing to compare performance wise. But I would be curious to see if anyone has experienced a performance boost from Yoga during a tri after completing one with out Yoga as part of the training process.

Well, like I said I notice a huge differece in strength (leg) in my run. I was out for 5 months with a stress fracture and concentrated on swimming, yoga and cycling. When I started running again I had minimal "trauma" and came back running faster than before I was injured. I am sure the cycling helped too, but I know the yoga helps.
Thanks guys!

I've been doing Bikram yoga recently after developing some lower back pain. For those who are unfamiliar this is the type of yoga performed in 100+ degree heated room.
I've been maintaining my workout schedule as it was before, in addition to the Yoga classes which are 4 times a week. Given that I sweat off between 3 and 4 pounds in one of these classes, is it safe to carry on with my normal workout otherwise as long as I re-hydrate? Essentially, hydration issues aside, can excessive sweating cause problems for me?
