New Ironman 70.3 Series Race Coming to Calgary
Wonder what will happen with Newfoundland race since it had poor turn out this past weekend. 250 athletes and 10 relay teams.
That is terrible.
Newfoundland is in a very sparsely populated part of the country... can't believe they even tried it. Do people tend to travel that much for a 70.3?? Besides, there's the Muskoka 70.3 in Ontario, why leave the province if you don't have to...
Calgary will draw athletes from all of Alberta (3M+ people) and BC. Much better place for a race.
And it's only 15 minutes from my in-laws!!! :) Sweeeeet! :) I'm there!

Anyone know how to register? Do these 70.3s tend to sell-out quickly?
Muskoka sold out in 2 months.
Go to the site on Sat. and there should be a registration link there...

Weird - it's point to point!?

So 2 transition zones?

yep! it happens... not a lot of races are setup this way but they can be. it's a minor nightmare for both the athletes and race directors. LA Triathlon, Boise 70.3 are two races that come to mind right now like that.

ohhhhh--- an excuse to go visit Banff again on the way out :)
The area around Calgary is gorgeous. I don't know if I would incur the cost to travel that far for a 70.3, but it sure is more feasible than Newfoundland.
I would LOVE to go to Newf, but in about 90 seconds I could tell it would be way too expensive. The pictures there look phenomenal.
I am sure this race will do well, pulling from Alberta, BC, Manitoba, and the PacNW. Lots of triathletes up there.
$250? Ouch... I can do a 1/2 Iron here for $120 and not have to worry about airfare.
I'll probably save doing this race for another time and get the first 1/2 distance done closer to home.

Yeah, but they're only Canadian dollars!
Right, beads?
That bike course will be a smokin' ride - tail wind most of the way, sometimes up to 40kph in the afternoon. Chinook winds.
The run around the reservoir is very nice, and protected from the wind for the most part. You may even see some beaver on the run. (no, not that kind. Well... maybe)

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH YEAHHHH RIGHT!
Meanwhile $250 is only $50 more than my last HIM and if I am going to drive 15 hrs what's a few more at that point?
Yeah, the $250 wasn't the only consideration. :) I was going to do this as part of a family vacation, and upon reflection realized that my youngest turns 2 in June... so that adds an extra airfare vs taking that vacation in May/June.
I'll probably do Muskoka instead, and swallow the $250.

We have another new Ironman 70.3 Series race being added to the schedule in 2009, this time it's the city of Calgary getting a new triathlon race in the series.
