Active.com / Cool Running

Reading the thread on active.com and race fees (for the record I consider active.com to be getting close to Ticketmaster on how ridiculous their fees are), I had a related question but didn't want to hijack the thread...

Why did Active buy Cool Running? I was on CR when I first got into running a couple years ago (before tackling triathlon) and really enjoyed the camaraderie of the community.

A few months later, Active bought CR. At the time, I thought it was to add the community to its own- even though Active already had a community it seemed they were trying to build its members. This was understandable.

Instead, it seemed like they alienated the people that made up the community in how they made the transition and didn't seem to do anything to try to bring the CR people back. I was wondering if there was some other motivation that I missed in the purchase. If not, it certainly was a blunder by Active's management.

It doesn't affect me anymore as Trifuel is the only athletic board I am active on- I lurk on ST, but really don't care for some of the attitude over there. I suppose I am just curious if anyone knows anything.

Kind Regards,

Kevin

Kevin, I couldn't have written it better myself. Get out of my head :) I had an identical experience. I was at CR for a few years. Didn't use the community element at all, but the log was crucial to my training. Active did NOT import CR's data. I lost years' worth of training data. I tried to start over but found out within a week or so that active's log did not keep a cumulative annual total. I could just see it: Some fat database program manager said, "Nah, we don't to take up our storage space by keeping records that are more than a few months old. Why would a runner care about how far or fast they ran last year?"

So I came over to trifuel to be the nattering nabob of negativity (sorry Spirow). Anyway, I have no answer for you, just validating your experience.

Hey TriSooner, just to spook you a little further it was your post's mention of CR on the "opinions of active.com" thread that brought it up in my head in the first place.

I definitely sympathize with your loss of data. So many CRers lost years of their logs and it was crushing to them. I was very fortunate that I had successfully backed up my data. I imported into the active interface and found the 13 steps it took to log a run (maybe an exaggeration, maybe not) beyond irritating.

At the recommendation of several others on CR, I moved over to Running Ahead, where the webmaster was able to import my log. Though not as useful for a triathlete as CR, it was light years better than active for keeping my activity.

Do you- or anyone else- recommend good places to log tri-specific workout data? Honestly, I haven't even looked at the trifuel one and will later tonight.

BTW- congrats on your European adventure and IM Germany finish! I saw some of your pictures on your photolink; VERY cool trip.

Cheers,
Kevin

One thing I like about Trifuel's log is that I'm always reminded of my training hours from iGoogle. It reminds me that I need to make the bars go up. Brilliant.
