Hello, everybody: I have been absent for a while due to family, job and other stuff that has happened in the past year and a half. Anyway, I am doing my second IM this coming September and, even though I feel good after my swim, bike, run workouts, I have not done as much as the first time around. Like I said, I am working and also, watching my grandchildren so I am super busy every day. I still have managed to train but the volume has been significantly less than in 06. This is more or less what I am able to do every week, mostly in the afternoons, ughhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
SWIM.- 2 times a week for 1 1/2 hours. No drills, just warm up and straight swimming. Average each time 3000-3500 yds.
BIKE: 2-3 times a week. Average miles each time: 40-50. On Saturdays, if possible I do at least 60, but sometimes I don't ride on Saturdays. So far I have done two 100 mile rides, one in June and one this month.
RUN: 4-6 miles 2 times a week. One long run, if possible on Sundays of 10 miles. I have done only one 13.1 mile run so far.
So, you see? I am a bit worried. So my question for all of you doing your second IM is: Have you trained as much for the second IM as for the first?
I guess I am asking to maybe put my mind at ease so I hope you can share your thoughts on this.
Thank you so much.
Maria.

I don't know how you'll do but I'm in the same boat. For my first IM last August I had a structured plan and a coach. After the IM, I signed right back up for my second. However after a move and job change I had pretty much given up competing in it. Twelve weeks prior I said what the hell but my training is significantly less. In six weeks I can better answer your question.

I have a friend who insists that training is overrated and that most AG athletes train way too much. She does 2 swims, 2 bikes and 2 runs a week and she does an IM just about every year. She paced me for Vineman 70.3 and she's doing anothet 1/2 IM this weekend. I'm sure she will do well.

I think the deal is that you KNOW you can go the distance. You will be fit when you get there. If you can squeeze on 1 really long swim, 1 15-20 mile run and 1 more century I'm sure you'll be fine.

Ok, what's going on? You finished third in your AG in your last IM. You're not fooling anyone :) I should've asked you for your advice on my training for my last IM. Good luck.

You know you can finish it... you've already been there. If it were me though, I would:

- increase my swim sessions to 4000 yards
- try to get in at least a couple of 100 mile bike rides
- try to build towards a long run four weeks out that is either three hours or 20 miles whichever comes first.

My logic is this, I'd want to be comfortable doing the swim, I'd want to have a couple of long days in the saddle under my belt, and I'd attempt to run as far as I could on race day.

Obviously if you're planning on walking the majority of the run leg then your time might be better spent cycling more.

Hello again: Thanks for the replies, I guess in the back of my mind is the thought that I have done this already and therefore I can do it again so I try to convince myself that if I am not getting as many hours in as in 06, it's ok.
I will turn 57 on September 7th., IM Wisconsin race day and this time around, when I cross that finish line, I can't think of a better birthday gift than a finisher's medal.
In 06, my only goal was to finish (the 3rd. place in my AG was just the icing on the cake) and this year, my goal still remains the same, FINISH, no matter what.
One thing I wish for this day, though, and that is decent weather, not cold like in 06, not blazing hot like in 05, (I volunteered), just a nice all around day. But the weather is unpredictable and there is not much you can do about it so, this is just a wish, that is all.
Anybody doing this IM this year? I remember in 06, some of us who were racing got together for lunch at the Noodle Co. restaurant on Saturday so I hope this year we can do it again.
Thank you again for your comments and votes of confidence.

Maria.

Hey Maria - Ya, you will do fine. We had great weather in '07 - sure beats '06. '08 well, we'll see...
I'm racing again this year and so is PJT and Mrs PJT. Not sure on any others.

Good to see you back Maria! You have done it before, so you know what the day will feel like. That is a huge advantage in a second IM. Get in the training you can, but grandkids are more important for sure :)

No need for the same training. At least one long dist. of each event is good enough. I did IMAZ and IMC in 2007 with 2 half btwn. Keep up the AeT and you will be fine. No need for the high hours anymore. Good luck and welcome back.

You'll be fine! IM is mostly mental anyway. Just make sure you pace yourself properly at the race and you'll do great! and BTW, altough I've done 5 IMs I probably shouldn't be giving advice to someone who finished 3rd in AG :) congrats and good luck this year!
