I am a newbie and about 5 weeks into training for an October 6th Sprint. I have never in my life had a sore hip flexor. This is a new muscle that has not seen much activity in my life time. I am two days on rest and it is feeling better. Is this over training? I can only assume this was related to the bike. I tried a brick on Tuesday and went to a spin class on Thursday. I dialed it up pretty good because I was trying to maintain my heart rate and chose tension over cadence. This is the first time I have felt any soreness and I have been at it pretty strong for about 5 weeks. Any thoughts or comments? I probably should be stretching more.....

It seems you already know what the causes are. If you are new to any physical activity, newly used muscles will become sore. Might be overtraining, but I imagine it is from the run:

The hip flexors are considered to be the most important muscle in the running process.

I'm new to all this too, but stretch, stretch, stretch. I'm finding that yoga is really good for working out all my tight spots.

Good luck!

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can...

You may want to try targeted IT band and hip stretches.
This condition is usually the result of going to hard to fast. Ice- 20 minutes on 10 minutes off and massage also helps in reducing the pain.
