Olympic Haze
mmmm...take a nice...cough...long...cough...breath!!! :) hmmm...daily caloric intake done with that nice long breath. Yum!
I feel bad for a lot of the Chinese people. They're re-routing clean water from the villages to the city for the Olympics. They're saving the higher quality food for the Olympians, not the Chinese people (who will have to eat crappy food for the duration of the Olympics?). shutting down all of the factories to hopefully get rid of the pollution. Saddening.

+1. I still can't understand what they were thinking when they chose Beijing for the Olympics. I actually lived in Torino during the months leading up to the Olympics in 2006, and I thought the same thing there.

Apparently Beijing spent $40 billion, instead of the standard $4 billion to build the site. The pool is actually temporary and has some kind of cool bubble thing in the walls.
"Whether you think you can or can't, you're right"
My wife goes to Hong Kong for work and she tells me it is hazy all the time and the air quality is crappy ;-P

Its because China is a HUGE emerging economy and world market player. It's all bizness.
Weary is the path that does not challenge.
And who is surprised by this? We've heard this was going to happen. It will be just as filthy during the Olympics.
Haile Gebrselassie pulls out of Beijing marathon because of pollution

Just one of many, I'm sure.
many restaurants won't be serving dog either.
Don't be so easy on yourself 'cause this one might be all that you have left
It's horribly obvious the reason that the Olympics is in B-town because of the $$$ and future bizness. Poor Matt Reed.
Figure this:
LA well known for being a HORRIBLY polluted city in the US despite being in California where the environmental requirements are steep has ~ 10 million
Beijing has over 15 million with zero environmental requirements... hm....
Weary is the path that does not challenge.
the real shame is that after the olympics the factories will be up and running again and all the cars will be back on the roads (even license plates and odd license plates have to drive on different days). Its all a facade to make it look like they care. in 20(?) years Beijings haze will be the west coasts problem too... OH, but at least some people will have gotten rich.
When our economy was developing we didn't give a poop about the environment either. It's not like factories in hte 1940's were concerned about their impact.
Still... it's straight up fraud in bejing
What I really want to know is why are the Olympics in China? I will laugh if any world records are broken in events taking place outside.
its on like donkey kong
Still... it's straight up fraud in bejing
That's what bugs me. The fact that they have a ton of pollution is one thing, especially since pretty much every country has certain cities with really bad pollution.
But the fact that they're just lying about it is ridiculous. It honestly makes me mad, which is dumb, because I obviously can't do a thing about it.
But, yeah, we can't necessarily complain about the pollution itself, especially since a lot of it is probably from stuff they're producing to send to other countries. I'll really complain about the pollution when I've switched entirely over to electronics which were produced domestically (i.e. never).

Polution used to be the indicator of prosperity and being rich. Maybe that's what they're still thinking since they're economy is getting better. Just thinking back on old movies. The ones with big smoke stacks and "polution" seemed to be the richer cities, where all the "fun" was happening.

Interesting. I don't think they would intentionally pollute to appear more prosperous, but it is an interesting thought about the way we perceive wealth and stuff.

Maybe this is over-simplifying things, but someone told me that China has bigger things to worry about than the air. Maybe he is underestimating the importance of air, and it certainly doesn't justify lying. My point is, maybe we aren't comparing apples to apples when we ask China to maintain the same air quality as contries in a better situation.
Just a bad place for the games if you ask me. Hopefully the Olympics will bring some needed revenue and attention to them in order to assist in some of the essential needs they have been lacking.

+1 to everything. I don't doubt that they have bigger problems. But, they could say that instead of just pretending like they don't have a pollution problem.
But, yeah, I don't doubt that they have bigger problems than pollution. But, when it comes to endurance events at the olympics, the pollution kind of comes to the forefront.
I know it's going to affect the games, but I really hope it doesn't totally ruin things. Because if you have a ton of olympians who can't even finish their event, that would be ridiculous.
