If this sort of thing interests you look at a book from Bicycling Magazine: "Long Distance Cycling"
Great resource for those of us that feel a century or IM ride is "Too short."

Someone posted a link to an article about a cyclist who rode very long distances and experienced mental changes during the ride. The article in general talked about how our minds may trick our bodies into slowing down.
