You should breathe in a way that makes you comfortable.
No 2 athletes breathe the same way.
I don't even think of how I breathe.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Yeah, I've heard/read stuff on rhythmic breathing while running...i usually just blow it off. I have enough other stuff on my mind while running to monitor every breath and how it's timed. just relax and breathe as is natural for you.

Are you getting side stitches and want to get ride of them, or work on your breathing or both?
Pilates/Yoga breathing will help when I need to slow down, pace myself or get over a stitch. Take a big breath in through your nose and slowly exhale through your mouth. Usually helps me.

Now for side stitches stretching out the core before running and during if I'm experiencing one will help. I believe they are brought on from a weak core, poor breathing or weather conditions (in my experience cold weather has brought them on). In the last few years my core has become very strong and I rarely experience them anymore.

i've got a strong core, but there's no such thing as too strong of a core. in my lifting background, most of the stuff i do hits the core, and i train the core around once or twice a week on most cycles. i'll be focusing more on core stamina and dexterity by training core on my swim days.

I heard that side stitches come from the lack of deep breaths. It's got something to do with the kidney, and when you take a bigger breath (breathe properly, not a bunch of squirrely breaths) it'll help stretch out that spot and keep everything happy.

If you do happen to get a side stitch, breathe in through your nose and out your mouth. I have tried many methods, and this is the most effective; within a minute or two I usually start to notice a difference. I have no idea why this works, my cross country coach taught it to me years ago.
