Exceeding Expectations is a wonderful program for at-risk kids in San Bernardino, California. Through the program the kids get to race tris and be a part of something strong, with great mentors. The goal is not to build elite athletes (although some of those kids are *fast*) but to build great people. I was fortunate enough to get to volunteer with them, and it was wonderful.

Over time, the group has collected a number of bikes, helmets, running shoes, tools, spare tires, and other tri equipment. I sadly received this email yesterday:

***************************
Sometime on July 17 or 18, the trailer we use to store all of the kids' equipment and bring it to races and training was stolen. The trailer itself was located a few days later but all 35 bikes were taken, along with all our helmets, tools and spare tires and tubes.

We thought we were properly insured but it turns out we were mistaken. So, once again, we're relying on the generosity of our friends and supporters to come to our aid. We've posted an inventory of what we need to get going again here, and we'll keep it updated as donors pledge replacement items. If you don't have equipment you can spare, please consider a financial donation, which we'll use for repairs to the trailer (the hinges on the door were sawn off), proper insurance, secure storage, and replacement of items we don't get via donations.

Please note that we'll be happy to reimburse you for shipping costs out of our general fund.

**************************

If anyone has anything they'd like to donate, please let me know and I can help you get it to them. If you have other questions, feel free to ask them in this thread or PM me. I have nothing but respect for this group, and don't want the kids to have to miss a single race or group event. Thanks!

Could you post that inventory list of needed items?
I know I tend to have some extra stuff laying around.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Yup... I just got some more details on it, so here is the list.

What they need:

  • 35 bikes: 15-20 medium-size road or tri bikes, 15-20 small road or mountain bikes, all in good working condition
  • 60 helmets, mostly small and medium
  • Bike tools: the usual (pliers, screwdrivers, allen wrenches, etc.) plus two folding work stands, tire irons, pedal removal wrench
  • Tires and tubes
  • Clipless pedals (not taken, they just never had enough)
  • Bike shoes (not taken, they just never had enough)
  • 3 pumps (floor style)
  • 2 surfboards (used these to accompany less accomplished swimmers during open water swims)
  • Money! For trailer repairs, insurance, secure storage, and replacement of items we don't get via donations

They do not need clothes, running shoes or wetsuits, as the thieves left them. I have a follow up email out now to confirm this list and find out what the stars mean. I will update once I know more.

Exceeding Expectations
31855 Date Palm Dr., Ste 3 # 505
Cathedral City, CA 92234

They say they will cover shipping costs if you want -- so if you want to just donate that as well you can.

For people in the Southern CA area let me know if you have items to donate and I will coordinate getting them from you and to the group.

Thanks all! I have it on my todo list as well: go through my toolbox and see what duplicates are there, etc. Spring cleaning time anyways, right?
