Recommended Wheelset?

I'm an age grouper and do pretty well when I race. My focus is 70.3 and Ironman distance races. If I could only purchase one wheelset for both training and racing, what would be a good size that would shave some time and remain durable enough to ride frequently.

My blind recommendation (if you want the fancy carbon deep dishers) would be some 303 - 404 clinchers || or anything comparable. Zipp has a strangle hold on the market and I'm not convinced it's due to anything other than marketing. HED makes great wheels too for nearly 1/2 the price.

Otherwise I've had pretty good luck w/ my good ol Mavic Ksyrium SL'
-wicked lite - durable - affordable

HED JET 50

ZIPPY

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Go with Hed Jets. They only have a fairing laid over a "normal" rim, so they can take the hits from everyday training better than the Zipps. If I could have two sets of wheels I might go with 404's (or 808's or a disc etc...), but if you only have one set I say Jets. They are cheaper, too.

Mine :) I'm selling a set of Mavic Carbon Cosmics..barely used...3 races, less than 100 miles total. let me know.

Otherwise, zipps are good,404's are all around good...

It depends how much you are really willing to spend. If you are trying to keep within a budget i would suggest looking at the hed jets or the zipp flashpoints. I have a set of the flash points and for the price i love them (80mm set, new, for $900)! Keep you current wheels for training and look for a set of 40mm or 60mm FP's for racing. Having a set of wheels that is dedicated to racing, will also help you cut down on the chances of flating out during a race.

- Hed Jet 60/90
- Hed Jet 60/90 C2
- Flashpoint 60/80

I run the top set and love them.

Hed Jet 60/90 or Flashpoint 40mm/80mm. I'd still use the money savings from those sets (as compared to Zipp) and get a cheapo set of Shimano 105s or Easton Vista's for everyday riding. I'm not saying that Hed or Flashpoint aren't durable, but all wheels can break so I'd rather do the majority of my rides on a pair that wouldn't put me out $500 if I lost one.

EDIT: should say Flashpoint 60mm.

HED-3

I've had mine for 4 years now. I do all my training and racing (IM) on them.
Great wheels.
If they ever would need replacing I would without a doubt get another set.

Don't be afraid to go tubular either, if you don't mind learning new skill sets. However if you like simplicity stick with clinchers.
