Well this one actually has nothing to do with Active... just picking a popular race ;)

I plan to volunteer at IMC 2009 to reg for 2010... sure, makes it more expensive, but I'll also get to give back to the sport by volunteering and will get to cheer for Kat and Beads and PoC and any others who are up there for it.

I completely understand that. I just figured I'd throw that out there. I think next year I'm moving entirely to registration by mail.

But, yeah, that's cool that the race is so popular.

I won't be suprised to see the same thing at FL too.

Having to travel a long way to volunteer in order to register for an IM means that I'm out. There's only so much I'm willing to pay for any race, no matter how cool. And having to shell out transportation and lodging just to volunteer, so that I can shell out more for the race fee... we'll I've reached my breaking point.

Well I couldn't register for 2009 so I might have to try volunteering of I might try another IM race or just do an Iron Distance(non branded race)

I looked for IM and Iron distance races and here are some, and they don't sell out as quick, or at all.

Cheaper race fees too!

+1 Don't need to elaborate. You've just about covered it. I'm just glad I got into my Ironmans (relatively) early on before everyone and their dog decided to try one. Same thing happened to marathons in the late 90s, early 2000s. When you see Oprah running 26.2, you know marathons have gone main stream.

1976 25,000
1980 120,00
1990 236,000
1995 312,000
2000 389,000
2001 366,000
2002 388,000
2003 400,000
2004 423,000
2005 432,000

I know of a few folks who seem to sign up for IMLP every year, then choose to not train. They then either arrive on race day with plans to not do the whole event, or decide not to go at all. That kind of behavior probably happens more now that slots are so highly sought after. It will probably just get worse too, where people will start to register just to have the slot year in
and year out. That is not cool for folks who really want the slot and would fully commit to the training and race day experiences.

I am starting to think other events should be named as regional or national qualifiers for these events. I know that there would be lots and lots of problems with that approach and I'm not saying it is really an option. But I just wonder if maybe someone has to work a little more for the entry, rather than just exercising his or her right to bear plastic, that person would actually commit to the slot and respect the event and fellow iron people rather than just wasting the whole thing.

I don't understand why they don't simply hold more races. WTC is clearly leaving a bucket of money on the table here.

Who cares if the Kona spots are spread across more races? Most of us have no chance of qualifying anyways... we just want to spend a week's pay on a race.
