$50 for domestic. No 2nd bag charges. I haven't flown international since March, but American was charging $100 then (they didn't know to charge on the way back, though).

+1 I paid $110 for DFW to Frankfurt on AA. I'd imagine if you are flying to Brazil from the US, you're looking at $100 probably.

I think southwest allows a boxed bike as a carry-on item, at no extra charge.

http://southwest.com/travel_center/sports_equipment.html

"Non-motorized Bicycles, including Bike Friday and Co-Pilot, will be accepted in substitution of a free piece of checked baggage at no additional charge provided the bicycle is properly packaged and the box containing the bicycle fits within the 62-inch sizing limit and weighs 50 lbs or less . (Maximum weight is 50 pounds and maximum size is 62 inches (length + width + height) per checked piece of luggage). The handlebars, kickstand, and pedals must be removed and placed inside the box. A $50.00 each-way charge applies to bicycles that don’t meet the above criteria. Bicycles packaged in a cardboard box or soft-sided case will be transported as a conditionally accepted item."

You can't get a bike under 62 inches unless it's a Bike Friday. Please nobody ever do a triathlon on a Bike Friday. This year all the airline ticket counter people seem to be much better at spotting bikes and hitting you with the charge before you even have a chance to try to wriggle out of it. Southwest is the cheapest at $50 (Airtran is 2nd at $69 I think), but it takes some sweet-talking to get it done for no charge no matter what airline you fly on (I think I've gotten out of the charge 3 times on 8 flights so far this summer).

I don't think that will fit in the overhead. :) What a visual.

I'll just do a trackstand in the aisle. That should be fine, right?
