Does anybody do yoga while actively training for a race? I've found it a great way to prevent injuries and stretch out, but I'm not sure how to make room for it in a training program. Any ideas?

I can't do yoga, the coordination is not there for me and I can't pay for a one on one with an instructor. BUT I somehow manage to do Pilate and LOVE IT. I think both are great for injury prevention while also building strength in muscle weaknesses. I train for HIMs and do a 60 min class per week and then 20-30 mins 2-3 time a week in the mornings on my own. What distance do you train for? I expect to continue my Pilates through my IM training. Knock on wood, it's the first year I've been injury free.

I take a yoga class that is offered at lunchtime at the courthouse where I work... I take the class on Tuesdays, and it is usually not my only workout that day. I will either treat the day as recovery and maybe do transition practice (working on leaving my shoes on the bike) in the morning, or I will pair yoga with speedwork in the evening. I think that it is important to maintain flexibility, and yoga definitely helps!

I do hot (Bikram, and or a power class) 4-5 times a week 90 minutes each. Have been doing it since March when I could not run due to a stres fracture. I can tell a huge difference in : my strength, flexability and speed running. I have lots of free time which is why I do it so frequently. I highly recommend it.

As for fitting it in, I don't know that I am the best to give advice. I am "retired" since last July, and have no kids so pretty much have all day to work out. This year my focus is HIM (taking a year off from IM).

I take a yoga class regularly, but when I can't get there I have a dvd - Rodney Yee (I think) Yoga for Athletes. He does 10 minutes sessions for different sports - running, biking, swimming and a couple others. It's great to do at home and it's short enough to do anytime.

Wow, thanks for all the feedback. I'm a newbie to tri.. aiming for a sprint in early October. I'm coming back from a running injury, and yoga has helped me incredibly with that, although I usually only go to 1 60 minute class a week. Even if it does nothing else, I feel like it helps me to relax and take care of myself - I'm a glutton for overtraining.

I've also found www.yogatoday.com which has free 1hr yoga videos posted daily. Most are taped near Jackson Hole, Wyoming and are geared towards skier/snowboarders or other outdoor activities. It's a good alternative if you can't get to a class or need a little guidance!

I do me some Yoga about once a week. The "YogaX" workout from P90X. since starting 10 weeks ago I've added 7 inches to my "sit and reach" test, as well as eliminated many of my IT band issues. Love it.

I'm about to start trying the Rodney Yee discs next week.

I do yoga about 1-2 week depending on how much I"m training and what races I'm training for. Usually in the winter 2 times a week but summer I only get there once a week since I spend so much time doing tri training. I usualy fit my yoga class in on a day where I only do a 60 minute run for my workout for the day. I find that when I go out for a 2-3 hour bike ride there is no way I'm doing yoga after that, nor when I do any brick workouts during the week. Or I might do yoga on Sunday night since I have the time from being able to get in my long workout that morning/ afternoon. Yoga is great and I have found so many benefits to my training from it including breath control, flexibility, strength, and just overall making my body feel good!
