How much time should I give myself to train for an Ironman? I'm planning on doing Lanzerote next year (May 2006) and I'm curious as to when I should start IM specific training. My last race this year is Los Angeles Triathlon which is 9/11/2005. I'm thinking a month of active rest followed by seven months of coached training.

1. Is that okay to do, because if I need to cut this season short by a month or two, I'd be willing to do that?
2. What type of coaching should I be looking for? I see some coaches simply put out plans, others have coached workouts, some have group workouts, and even fewer offer all three. I'd like a blend of all the services, I'm curious as to what you guys use.
3. How does your swim coach and your tri coach interact? Do you basically act as the go between?
4. How much do you pay for the coaching services that you use?
5. Does your coach have some custom logging mechanism for you? Does your coach look at them?
6. How does your coach provide feedback?
7. In what form does your coach deliver to you your workouts? An online plan, through the mail?

I know this is a pretty long list of questions, and each question should maybe be a thread of it's own.

Thank you in advance for your feedback,

Chris

1. Depending on your experience and fitness level 7 months should be fine to prepare for an IM. If you have only ever done sprints you may want to wait another year.
2. How much $$ do you want to spend. This is usually the first speedbump. Depending on your answer to #1 you could look at online programs and join a tri club in your area for training partners and or some partial coached workouts. I use an online coach and am a member of a tri club which has some coached swim workouts that i attend.
3. Same dude for me.
4. <400 US for my IM program
5. Yes and Yes
6. Email or over the phone or in person
7. website ( you log in-there it is)

hey Chucky,

I believe you're doing a half this year, Ralph's right? If so, as long as your keep your fitness through the off season you should be fine in preparing for an Ironman. Here is a 36 week plan I posted a couple weeks back. Browse through to get an idea of how training escalates and if you use it, just work backwards from your race date to plot your schedule.

36 Week Ironman Plan

On coaches, here's a list of online and local.

Depending on what kind of interaction you want, local may be a better alternative. Being in the LA area you have more to choose from. Rich Strauss writes some stuff you see posted in our training articles sections and he's in SoCal. He and several other coaches also use Training Peaks to layout plans and interact with their clients. It was created by Dirk Friel I believe, who is Joe Friel son. From what I've heard it's a good system.

I've also heard good things about Mark Allen's services. Mostly on-line but I believe he has some camps in Northern Ca.

thx for the info guys. Yes, I'm dong Ralph's with your bro's in 31 days. I'm shooting for a 5 1/2 time although that may be a bit aggressive for me.

I'm seriously considering Rich. I'm going to narrow down what exactly I want from a coach this season as I know I can make quite a bit of progress on my own this year. It appears as though Rich is the closest high profile coach in the area (he's about an hour drive from me on a good day).

thx again for the info.

Chucky, Rich Strauss is my coach. If you've already spoken to him and want more input, contact me off-list.

Thank you, we've only exchanged through messageboards. Right around August I'll be picking out a coach and if your offer still stands, I'll take you up on it then :)

thx - Chris
