Question about 650C wheels

Hey,

I bought a used bike and it's got 650C wheels. It's an older QR and I absolutely love it. The rims are pretty beat up and I bent one pretty good on my last ride. I'm looking at buying a new set for the bike but I'm not sure what to buy!

At Nashbar, for example, if I'm looking at wheels, how do I know if they're 650C or not? I'm pretty new to all this (obviously :) and I'm familiar with the standard 26X1.25 or 700C but I can't seem to find anything at 650C.

Thanks for any input!

Not to be tacky, but if they say 700, they aren't 650. :) Not all wheels come in both 700 and 650, but many do. There aren't that many choices when it comes to (road) wheel sizes: When you go to buy them it will ask you if you want 650 or 700, tubular or clincher. If they don't specifically say 700 or 650, you need to ask the retailer because my experience is that the majority of wheels sold are 700.

Not tacky at all. But on Nashbar, under Wheels-Road, less than half specify 700 and I can't find one 650 set. Are they that uncommon? As you say, it looks like the vast majority is 700 and I've called 4 LBSs and none have any 650 wheelsets in stock.

They are pretty uncommon these days. But it shouldn't be tooooo hard to find some. I know that some very popular tri bikes (like Cervelo P2C and P3C) use them on their smaller sizes. But I wouldn't be too surprised if the LBS needed to order them and didn't have any on hand.

I guess 650s are more uncommon than I thought. Don't know why. As kylie indicated, finding them new might be hard. Try used? I just looked through the Mavic website (quickly) and it doesn't even look like they are making 650c any more. Another thought would be custom wheels. You can probably more easily find 650 rims and have them built up locally and then you'd really have customs.

Good points all, thanks. I like the custom idea...but that brings up another question ...

I went to the link: http://www.teamcyclist.com/store/Easton-Wheel-Road-Set-EA50-650c_P18186....

And noticed there is the option of Campy or Shimano hubs. I assuming this relates to the gear set you have? My bike has Campy so I have to buy Campy hubs?

I'm learning something new everyday :)

Its not necessarily a Campy brand hub, but a Campy compatible hub. I think it is something about cassette spacing or mounting or some nonsense that apparently no one can agree upon!

Nice diva_mom...how do you like them? Also, if you don't mind me asking, what did you pay for those?

In my online searching, i just found a set of MAVIC CXP 33 650 wheels with Ultegra hubs.

But I have Campy groupo...can I have the hubs swapped for Campy at the LBS? Or will these wheels not work for me?

Found a bunch on Ebay....

Performance has:

Mavic Ksyrium Elite 650c Front Wheel
Mavic Ksyrium Elite 650c Rear Wheel

But over $600 for the pair.

I just got a pair of 650 Zipp 404s off ebay with a powertap hub. Prices were decent. I would look into buying a slightly used pair.

Awesome, thanks to all for the suggestions and input. I went ahead and bought the Mavic CXP33 wheelset with Ultegra hubs. The LBS will swap the hubs with my current Campy-compatible ones. It's a job I could do myself but I trust them more...

I got a decent deal, $300 Cdn for the wheelset, Ultegra hubs and rubber. But I have no use for the hubs...so anyone interested in some new Ultegra 32-spoke hubs ? :)

My next race in on August 2 so I had to get the new wheels on the bike ASAP (no time for shipping) so I can get back to training (and off my MTB!)

If you like Nashbar stuff you can call them and ask 1-800-NASHBAR.
They are pretty friendly and can help. ;-)

Nothing to it, but to do it

Maybe... PM with info, if you like. The girlfriend's bike could use some nicer hubs... You could also sell them on Craig's List, or Amazon. I hate Ebay.

on many hubs, the hub can be changed between campy and shimano (but not the cheapest). there are also remachined shimano cassettes (such as american classic) that allow you to use campy drivetrains with shimano hubs. but a campy cassette, by itself, will not fit on a shimano hub, and vice versa. it is the setup of the mounting of the hub, as well as the spacing.

650 was the standard triathlon wheel for a while (and even on some small road frames, i remember my kestrel 500sci, which had 650 wheels). however, for larger frame sizes, most manufacturers have changed to 700cs, for better efficiency (less pedal strokes to move the same distance).
