Hopefully no ones posted something like this. I’m spawning on my previous post (Got to ride with the Canadian Olympic team) and basing it on what 248-n8 said about meeting Hunter Kemper. To see what pro’s people have been able to chit-chat with and found to be friendly. This might help us decide whether to go up to them after a race and chit-chat with them or not.

Bella Comerford (Ironman Brazil 2006) – She was staying in the little hotel were in staying in for the race. We didn’t say much besides the customary Hello before the race. We talked to her and Stephen Bayliss the day after the race on the beach in front of our hotel. Very friendly.

Chris Legh (Buffalo Triathlon 2006) – I got to meet him at this tiny Olympic distance race in MN. It was after racing IM Brazil and we ended up talking about my race, it was cool instead of his.

Natasha Badman (Buffalo Triathlon 2006) – She was also at this tiny Olympic distance race. She was very nice and asked about IM Brazil since I had my finisher t-shirt on at this race.

Barbara Buenahora (Mar Del Plata 1/2 2007, Ironman 70. Pucon) – South American pro who finished 2nd at Ironman Brazil in 2006. Meet her on a training trip in Argentina, very friendly and nice, very helpful throughout our stay. Saw her again in Pucon, Chile and it was like were old friends catching up.

Hunter Kemper (Life Time Fitness Triathlon 2007) – We was hanging out by the Orbea booth, was talking to pretty much anyone that came up to him. We chit-chatted about his race. Friendly.

Oscar Galindez (Ironman 70.3 Pucon 2008) – Meet him at the front desk of the hotel while I was checking in, he was waiting for something. Very nice guy, talked to him on and off while I was there.

Chris McCormack (Ironman 70.3 Pucon 2008) – Talked to him several times in Chile, actually got to interview him for about 30 minutes which was cool. Hung out by him and others at the post race part till about 3:30 AM. He’s friendly even though it seems a bit intimidating to go up to him and talk to him.

Simon Whitfield (Plymouth, MN 2008) – Enough said with my previous post.

Ken Glah – Old time pro who now runs Endurance Sports Travel and races age group, this year might be his 25th consecutive Ironman Hawaii race. Traveled to Brazil, Switzerland and Pucon with him via his company. Actually worked for him at IM Wisconsin last year when he had a big group from Mexico. He did the IM 70.3 Pucon race as well. The day after we including others that raced and traveled with him climbed the local volcano after hanging out at the bar till 3:30 AM with Macca.

David Thompson – Local professional here in MN that is very fast on the bike. Very nice guy! Has a degree from MIT

sorry, got a little carried away with details...

I just "met" Michellie Jones at a "meet Michellie Jones" event

Chris Lieto at a "Meet Chris Lieto" event.

(both events were put on by my race club).

And of course, Jenny Moore, the undiscovered pro who is going to pace me through Vineman on Sunday.

And Pro Jenny and I saw Paula Newby-Fraser running in Coeur d'Alene a few weeks ago and since Jenny said hello that counts as a meet up, right?

I've met a bunch (50-ish?) and don't think I've ever not liked someone. I usually hang out with the "2nd tier" guys (LOL!) at races (the fast guys go off and do their own thing usually...or maybe all the fast guys are old and have wives and stuff who won't let them hang out with us whippersnappers).

The only I guy I can think of who I've seen at several races and not talked to is Craig Alexander. Granted, I hang out with a couple of girls who stare at him at every race, so maybe he's just creeped out. He did punch me in the nose at St. Anthony's, though (accidentally, I think) about 300m into the swim.

*edit* Actually, I just remembered one guy I don't like (at all). He poured all my tequila out to underage girls at my house, was a jerk about it when I confronted him, then drafted me on the bike at a fundraiser tri because he couldn't hang on to the pace. He never goes to any big races, so no one here will probably ever have to meet him. Other than him, I'm pretty sure you can walk up to any pro at a race and they'll be cool. Pros are just regular guys who train way to hard, anyway.

Ah! you know Jenny, that's cool! I saw her the other night on the ride with the Canadian Olympic team. She's is one heck of a woman. She encouraged me and got me through my first IM down in Brazil!

Good luck this weekend.

Duh! I forgot to mention:

Paula Newby-Fraser and Paul Huddle. They did a private triathlon camp here in MN for a couple of days last year. It was cool to see them, talk to them and learn from them...

Wait, wait, wait. You are burying the lead. Why were underage girls at your house drinking?

I've met tons... but the ones I remember meeting the most were Michellie Jones, Macca, Nicole DeBoom (who recognize me from meeting another time!), MarkyV, and ex-pro Mike ;) All the ones I have met were nice and friendly and just generally relaxed people (probably because I met most of them after big races -- such as in Kona in 07 hanging out with Mike and all his friends from back when he was a pro in Canada).

At the NYC tri they have several pros every year.
I have met Hunter Kemper, Craig Alexander, Greg Bennett who were in the race.
Dave Scott spoke at the pre pace meeting last year and I got to speak with him for a few minutes afterwards. It was awesome to meet a legend like him.

I actually got to swim with Hunter Kemper this winter at my local HS pool. Ok, ok, Hunter was speeding past me in the next lane, and we chatted for about :48 seconds but it was really cool (His wife grew up in the community I live in). The best part was that after he left I was talking to other people at the pool about it --most of them new to triathlon. I mentioned that Hunter Kemper was there at the same time. They didn't recognize the name, so I just pulled out the latest issue of Inside Triathlon and pointed to none other than Hunter Kemper on the cover! Everyone thought I was so cool because I recognized him by sight and got to talk to him (even if for :48 seconds). Nice guy.

I'm racing with Bryan Rhodes tomorrow. If he waits long enough at the finish line, I might be able to meet him.

Yeah, but I suck.....so it still doesn't count. That's like asking what Hollywood celebrities you know and answering "Britney Spears."

Ok. In that case I've met half a pro. ;)

At Vineman my friend Jenny and I were standing around waiting for someone when she spotted a guy on the bike of her dreams - the Specialized S-Works Tarmac (I think that's it). She ooed and ahhed over the bike and then said, "you better be fast on that bike!" and then I noticed the number on his helmet - 7. It was Terenzo Bozzone who won the race and set a new course record! He was adorable.

Hillary Biscay, who came to USC Tri to do a chat with us (she's a USC alum). She was very cool to talk with, and I've heard the same from people who have met her at IM races.

Cheered Craig Alexander, Sam McGlone, and Joanna Lawn at mile 12 of Lawrence 70.3, and they seemed pretty cool from that point.

Tim DeBoom was at Shawnee Mission triathlon this last year, and he was very approachable.

I don't think many pro triathletes are going to have their heads up their asses. There's not enough money or glory in it, yet, for that. We triathletes tend to be pretty down-to-earth people, as a group, and I think the pros exemplify that.
