What to do while on indoor-trainer to make time pass?

Since I'm injured, haven't been running so instead spending mega-hours on my indoor trainer. Mostly listening to music on my iPod. My limit is about 45 minutes before going into brain-melt.

You guys have any good suggestions of how to make it more bearable? Are there podcasts geared to indoor spinning? Workout routines that give you something to focus on (instead of focusing on my watch)?

Watch TV.

Or as I do... put a toddler in a high chair next to the bike and feed him cherrios. Do you need to borrow mine?

I have a Spinervals DVD that I use on occassion. It's an actual workout, so it's good for me, otherwise I might just sit and spin for an hour.

I also watch some tri's and other races that I have on DVR. You can also search Google videos for ITU triathlons, there are a bunch on there and most of them are >25 minutes. So if you string a couple together, it's enough for a decent workout.

+1 on watching stuff. I have a laptop setup with a music library, tv shows, movies to watch on the easy trainer sessions.

The harder ones all I'm doing is listening to music (EBM type music has really been working GREAT for harder efforts overall lately) and watching the little yellow lozenge (PT) that grew on my handlebars a few months ago making my life much more "interesting".

cheers

I guess it depends on the intensity of your workout. If you're looking for distractions to just keep you on the bike longer, I prefer sports talk radio. I can only take so much ipod music and radio (especially talk radio - doesn't have to be sports!) is a way to get some interaction with people and get your brain thinking about other things.

TV is also nice! If you have that option.

+1 for TV and Netflix, but it still sucks. Also, in the winter, we get together in a dude's garage set up trainers, close the door, turn on a propane heater, and 'ride' in a sweat box.

I like the Spinervals DVDs as well or Netflix (with the subtitles on because my trainer is loud)

Maybe. My toddlers are now 16 and 17 and give ME hand-me-down jeans. Not sure they'd be down on sitting in a high-chair next to my trainer.

For me the best way to stay on the bike is wicked structure. A trainer schedule I like is;

15min warmup
5x5min hard pushs with 1 minute spin between
15min cruise at endurance hr
3x10 muscle tension intervals with 2 minutes spin between
then building power ranges for 20 minutes; 1 minute hard all out - 1 minute spin...
then spin it out for the remaining 10 minutes

Other than that... if I'm alone, anything over 2 hrs is impossible.

Weary is the path that does not challenge.

Like others have said, I go through DVDs from the library or Netflix on my easy spinning trainer days, and have actually taken to spinning for half and hour before almost every run. Hubby and I workout together in the basement and have watched several TV series: Firefly, Battlestar Galactica, Dexter, and right now we're on the 2nd season of Weeds.

On harder days, I like Spinervals.

you must have a super low maintenance toddler, my toddler won't sit still for more than 10 minutes

I usually rent a movie; I tried watching tv, but the commercials got on my nerves- practically road rage

Spinverals for us!

Especially Sufferpalozia, 5 hours of Cycling ( or 100 miles )....

Of course, getting off the bike after 100 miles on the trainer stinks.

Spinervals, DVD, and sporting events. I'm a huge baseball fan, so I can get in a good couple of hours watching a game. But the best workouts are the one's that are done on the Spinervals.

He's an extortionist. If you keep the cherrios coming he'll do whatever you want. Cut him off and he turns green and wrecks the place.

Depends on my workout

If I'm looking to build power and strength I go with a structured workout. I'm too busy paying attention to my power/HR to get "bored".

If I'm doing an easy recovery ride or one to get time/miles in I'll read a book or magazine. This helps on my 2-3 hour spins.

I am a bigtime movie watcher Netflix rocks for it... however yes it still is boring... The other thing I like doing is putting on the tour de france and biking to that as well...

+1 on the structured workouts. That helps me a lot. I also figured out how to rig my son's basketball hoop so that I can put my laptop on it in front of my aerobars... and of course, then I browse TriFuel...

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

Well...I don't find the trainer boring at all...I fringe that way.
Where else can you ride with Jens or LA or Carlito or have Coach Troy bark at you while riding the Lake Placid course or practice your "lines." "No Luke...I am your Father !" "Of all the Gin joints in all the world ..." "One day ye will smell land where there be no land..."
I can also get in a un-interrupted hammer fest and sweat blood for as long as I want without the thought of getting axed by some yahoo who is texting his girl about how bored he is driving...
Started riding an old Racer Mate 20 years ago, rollers before that...I've learned a lot about mental discipline in the time since.

I'm on the trainer up to 5 times a week fo early morning workouts. Structured workouts I usually have the I-pod on. The more unstructured spins call for the Playstation 2.

Put him or her on the trainer next to you and let the family do a tri together! Best words I heard from my husband, "I can see why it is addicting." "It was fun." and our 7 yr old is going to work on swimming this year.
