OK....what race do I enter? Sprint or Oly?
start w/ a sprint and if all goes well follow up w/ an oly. you train for the oly and use the sprint as a training day. how much time do you have to train and where are your longest run/rides now?
My vote is to start with a sprint. It won't tax you too much and it'll get the hook in nice and deep and you'll be an addict just like the rest of us fools.
Weary is the path that does not challenge.
Sprint and work your way up. Unless you are trianing with a specific group for a specific event. (ie Challenged Athletes or Team In Training or your rich and have a coach and time)
I say sign up for an oly with at least a couple of practice sprints leading up to your "A race." Since you asked the question, I assume that's what you wanted to hear and that you're motivated to up the distance but need some encouragement to go for it. Congratulations on quitting smoking. Going long and crossing the finish line at your olympic race will be a great payoff.

+1
thanks.....I think it will be a sprint afterall. But living in Cleveland it may be my last of the year. So I guess I will trian all winter for the OLy.
thanks again

The great thing about trying is that it requires no previous experience
DO THE OLYMPIC!!!
My first was an olympic, and I just did it slow. I could of gone faster, and I could of done a sprint. It was the race that inspired me (Great Lake Escape - just down the turnpike from Cleveland). Going fast wasn't my motivation, but jumping into Lake Erie from a ferry 1500m from shore did motivate me. It was also a run on the beach, and close to my house.
Do what you want, not what people tell you is the best decision.
I remember giving my self a pat on the back for "only" smoking three cigs on the 2 hour drive to my first Tri. what a dope LOL)
Nah, you're just Old School:

I think you should follow your heart. If you have goals and aspiration of increasing the distance then do so. There's plenty of free knowledge to train smart.

Haha, my dad has a poster of that pic over his marathon finishing pictures. I think I got my sense of humor from him :-)
I have that poster framed and hanging in my office. It is actually from the Tour de France. Dunno what year.
That is how I USED to celebrate a good race/work out.
BTW.......These Nicotine withdrawls are a B I T C H. I have a total respect for women and thier PMS.. It is totally uncontrolable...the things that are flying out of my mouth are sometimes just plain mean. I immediately apologize to my wife, the plant, my shoe, the cat or whatever poor souls happen to be in the room when I have these nearly demonic episodes. They get better every day though......

that is my new profile pic !!!! :)

congratulations on quitting.
it doesn't matter what distance you do, as long as you do another!

I am still a newbie.....raced one season(3 races) two years ago and never went past sprint distance. After a 20 year, almost a pack a day smoking habit I FINALLY quit this year. I am back in decent shape and totally dedicated to Triathlon like never before (I smoked all through my training and racing two years ago. I remember giving my self a pat on the back for "only" smoking three cigs on the 2 hour drive to my first Tri. what a dope LOL)
Anyhow, I want to step up my distance but dont want to hurt myself. Should I start the year with a sprint or struggle through an Oly??
Thanks,
Jesse
