Well yesterday I finally did it. I swam a complete 300m without stopping or drowning. My race is in Sept. and it is a 300m/13mi/5k race. I had been worrying about the swim as when I started swimming several months ago I could only do 1/2 a 25m pool and then it was breast stroke city to the end and a nice two or three minute break.

Now the time wasn't spectacular, 5' 51" but I did it and then stopped, took a break and then did it a second time, this time posting it in 5' 45".

This definitely isn't insignificant. No matter what milestone it is, whenever anyone reaches something they didn't think was possible not too long ago, it's worth celebrating. Congratulations!!!!

Huge accomplishment. You do want to go past race distance prior to race day. Keep it up!

You SHOULD be proud of what you have completed. It shows that you have dedication, drive and commitment. No matter how much time you have to do this sport. And sometimes this can be hard. Revel in the advancements and reward yourself for a good job, ALWAYS! As you continue you'll find that the early on the advances come fast. You will get stronger and the times in all three events will get better and better. Enjoy this, because if you continue and become more serious, it will be tougher and tougher to get better. Even if that is not your goal (to get better and better), remember, we do this for fun. Enjoy and feel good that you are but a very small portion of the population that does this very rewarding and addictive sport. Nobody can take away your accomplishments. Anything you attain is yours 100% and it's YOUR personal accomplishment. THAT is what this sport is all about. We respect that. Good for you!

Most of us without a swimming background have been there. Celebrate each new accomplishment and use them as motivation to keep going longer and getting faster.

That's awesome! I'm +1000 on the other comments above. Working through that progression is a great feeling. Great job!

To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!

Nicely done. Somebody that can't swim 25m freestyle will read what you said and hopefully get more motivation to keep trying until they can do 300m nonstop.

I too remember a time when even swimming the full 25m was an accomplishment.

Always remember, every stroke you go beyond what you previously thought was possible is a victory. And, every Meter you go beyond 300 will be one meter longer than you have ever swam before.

You deserve a congratulations. Keep up the good work. Don't stop now!

Well done! That's an awesome accomplishment. I can relate to the swim part as my first tri season was last summer where i started with what's known as the mini which was 100m swim, 6.5k bike, 1km run. 100m swim freaked me out with no swimming background, did this a few times over the season, no technique just determination. My goal at the end of the season was to do the "tinman" which was a 300m swim, 12.5km bike, 3km run. The thought of swimming 300m with no sides to stop and hang onto really freaked me out. I think i managed freestyle for perhaps a combined total of 100m the rest was what i would call my own stroke - combination of dog paddle, breast stroke and i'm not sure what to call the other that kept me afloat! The worst part was that the elite males were let go after us so the battle to stay out of their way and not drown was a conversation topic for weeks after the race. A couple of weeks ago our group had one of the trainers from Total Immersion come and take us for a 4hr workshop - was unbelievable. My main goal for the upcoming season is to become one with the water and learn to swim like a fish to tackle the "Challenge" which incorporates a 6oom swim (oh my god!!) - now that's hilarious at this moment in time but apparently if i learn to relax in the water it will happen!! The ride and run - bring em on but swim, hmmm. Excellent work, doesn't matter how we get there as long as we do. I love the discovery of this site!!!!!

I love when I make those "little" advancements in my training which are HUGE for me, and when I think of them throughout the day, it makes me smile- just be proud of your accomplishments, every small step forward gets you closer to your goal.

I can totally relate! I remember when my wife and I registered for our first Sprint...the next day I was at the pool and I thought I was going to die after a full 25m lap! I was thinking "This is nuts!!"

That is a great accomplishment! Keep up the hard work!

Great Job!!
I thought I was a good swimmer before my first tri........and I was seriously mistaken.
It took some practice and now I know I am better but I still have room for improvemnt.

Nothing to it, but to do it

Way to go!

I completely know that feeling. I was a horrible swimmer when I was little and I really disliked it. I took a swim class in college that was taught in a 50m pool. It took several sessions before I could even make one length without having to pause and grab on. I didn't do any swimming for 3 years and picked back up again about 3 months ago. I could get through 50 yards, but I was sucking wind afterwards and had to rest for a minute. Now I'm up to doing 400 yards without feeling out of breath and just a few seconds rest before pushing off again. When training gets rough or I start to lose focus, I always come back to these early achievements. I tell myself "look how far you have come from swimming one length" etc. Always gives me a confidence boost and makes the pain go away.

No goal is insignificant. Way to go.

We all start somewhere. I think I've made my way up to ~300 yards at a time in practice (but I lose count easily). So that's... 274.32 meters. Got one up on me! Take every accomplishment and hold on to it; it's yours. Now it's time for new goals!

Thanks for the encouragement guys, and I am setting up a new goal as we speak. I have a semi-coach, my co-op who works in the office. He decided that my new goal was 1500m total by next spring. But then added that he wanted my times dropped on the length. I asked what that meant today and he informed me that he wanted me to be able to do a warm-up 500 (oh my god) followed by a workout of 40 - 25 sprints (3-5 sec. break between them). So I guess my next hurdle is to be able to get to the 500 level. And then on to the sprints. But I am going to savor this one for a while. I have been smiling from ear to ear for the past two days and can't wait for my next swim training on Sat. to show off to the wife my new found ability.

Socket - I kept losing count on my laps, had to utilize the old "Timex" and hit the lap counter with each lap. Only way that I truly knew that I had made 300. Had I not have used it I would have sworn it was only 250, but my trusty watch and my training partner both confirmed as he hit the 300 distance for the first time as well and was waiting at the end of the pool when I touched.
