Colored brake hoods/cable housing... stylish or dorky?

I mentioned to my wife that I wanted matching colored brake hoods (hudz) and cable housing (jagwire) for my birthday. She looked at me like I was mentally disabled.

So what's the verdict here... stylish or dorky? thinking about white if that makes a difference.

Could be both. It depends on what you like.
I like my Hawai'ian shirts, and my wife and kids, look at me like I am a freak too.

Follow your bliss!! ;-)

Nothing to it, but to do it

I like the idea doing some sort of customizing to your bike. Especially if it looks like mine, plain white. Throw some "bling" (or color) on that bad boy!!!!

I disagree...

I think white is lame. Everyone has white everything now. White grips, white wheels, white seat... LAME.

Neon is always a bold and rude statement. DO IT.

Good point about white. I'm also thinking about yellow, but don't want to be a yellow jersey dork.

I've got an orange IM jersey that would look wonderfully obnoxious with green hoods. Hmmm....

Only if it matches your "kit". And sunglasses.. water bottle..

Hey there's nothing wrong with a little style as long as the bike is worth the effort. You don't want to be guy with the hooptie bike with all the bling :) Plus if it comes out looking tacky the wife will REALLY think you're weird.

I often think about adding yellow accents to match my PowerTap computer ;) But right now most of my riding gear (and my other bike) are black and red. I think the hood covers look fun :)

What color is the bike is my question. Jerseys and water bottles change from ride to ride, but the bike color will stay the same. Get something that is wonderfully obnoxious and loud. I would go with the neon or some crazy color that matches the bike.

Neon? ummm, no.
Neon says i couldn't come up with a good color scheme so I vomited on the bike so people would notice. (few people can pull it off well)

The bike is your base color. Pick an accent color for the bars, seat, and cages; don't overdo it; and go with it.

You've just inspired me to make my base color neon green...

The bike is a boring dark gray, perhaps a "silvery gray". It's not a terribly fancy bike (Allez) but it is the one I have. So bright colors would pop on this dull backgorund... I think.

My tri bike is much nicer, red, and it's getting white bar tape to match the white accents it already has. I'd rather 'accent' it with a pair fo H3's but my stim check went to the diaper fund.

I'm sure some kid in a middle school art class could figure this out.

Dark gray Allez? I like my red one. Definitely needs some color in there. I wouldn't just go neon, I'd go LIGHTED! A small battery pack and some EL wire along all the cables and you're good to go :-)

Ok...

I got a mock-up for you. My goal was to use as many colors as possible, but still have a prevailing theme, or "scheme". The theme is "awesomeness."

so the lack of what's tying it together is what's tying it together? ;)

[sigh, i miss school: the all-nighters and the subsequently goofy ideas you draw up and then wonder about during the light of day!]

Shiba... what are the chances of that? You picked the exact colors of my favorite bibs and jersey.

Wow and I thought my all white bike, white seat, white water bottles, white cages, looked wierd.

The only color that i have are black rims, black tires, black hoods, and then to tough it off. Star Spangled handle bar tape. Hard to miss my mount anywhere with the tape. Didn't like it at first, but it has added character.

As long as I'm changing the bar tape anyways... maybe I'll convert the old 9 speed to a ten speed. Hmmm.... anybody know if you can buy/change just the right shifter?

Then I'll be able use my Powertap wheel on both bikes... once I get a powertap wheel. Changing the hoods has suddenly gotten very expensive!

Umm... sure you can. But is your Crank set-up to be a 10-speed? There is different spacing between the chainrings for a 10 speed and 9 speed drivetrain. You are going to need a new RD as well...

Will a 9-speed cassette not fit on a 10 speed wheel? Powertap is on it's way out along with the internet anyway. I'd steer clear.

Yeah, a conversion is clearly more complicated and expensive than I initially considered. once you talk about shifters, cranks, and a new cassette you're quickly approaching the $850 I spent to buy the bike in the first place!

So I'll be changing that cassette every now and then.

I would definitely go with changing the cassette. It takes about 5 minutes, and if you get a spacer for when you have the 9-speed cassette on there, you should be set.

Seriously, you should just rock this on the bike with matching hudz for the day. Coolest cycle ever. No, seriously. I'm stripping down my P2K and paining it with one of these when I convert it to a fixie.

Nice. From their description "This is the newest generation of GLOW in the dark paint. It is the best available with the longest GLOW time on the market."

What they don't tell you ... If you experience glowing lasting more than 4 hours you should consult your doctor.
