I want to do a marathon/ultramarathon in all 50 states. I have 7 states so far and will have 3 more by the end of the year for a total of 10.

That means 40 more to go.

Here are the states I have so far

Virginia - Marine Corps Marathon(twice)
Penslyvania - Philly marathon
Florida - Disney (3 times) and IM Florida
New Jersey - NJ Marathon (3 times)
Connecticut - Hartford marathon
Delaware - Triple Trail marathon
Maryland - Baltimore, JFK 50 miler, and Chesapeakeman

I am registered to do the following this year
New Jersey - Turkey Swamp 50K
New York - Yonkers and NYC marathons
Rhode Island - Breakers marathon
Maryland - JFK 50 miler
Nevada - Las Vegas marathon

I want to do;

Colorado - Pikes Peak marathon
California - San Francisco Marathon
Vermont - Jays Ultimate XC
Ohio - Flying Pig marathon
Washington DC - National marathon

Any suggestions for the other states, especially if you have done them?

Wisconsin - Lake Front marathon

http://www.badgerlandstriders.org/lfm/index.html

It is usually first week of Oct. Only 2-3,000 runners - think it is usually same day as Chicago.
Nice course - point to point - lot of running out in the country then back in to the Lake - good support and nice crowds. Friendly course. No significant hills.
I've done it a couple times.

Mardi Gras Marathon in Louisiana. It's in February...totally totally flat. I was there the first year after Katrina and we ran through both the French Quarter and some of the hard-hit areas of the city. Smaller crowds since most folks were still evacuated, but the volunteers were so happy to have us there.

In Michigan there is the Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Bank Marathon in Detroit. I haven't done it, but it's a popular race.

Beads - cool idea. A VC, Brad Feld, had a similar goal and blogged about it. Here's a link to his marathons: Feld's Marathons and it might have some ideas for you as well!

Race you on Sunday!

Texas - Dallas - White Rock Marathon. http://www.runtherock.com/

Its always in December, and for Texas that means it could be 60-70, or like this past year 42 and raining a little. Regardless, its usually great running weather!

AZ has a couple of cool ones The PF Changs Marathon in Jan or Dec can't remember which one. The Tucson marathon is pretty cool too, largely downhill course through some really beautiful country.

North Dakota - Fargo ... flat, fast, and the community throws out the welcome mat
Minnesota - Grandma's in Duluth ... also a fairly flat course and the town basically shuts down for the weekend of the marathon
Minnesota - Twin Cities ... nice urban marathon, lots of fan support, hills at the end

In Oregon, I'd go for the Eugene marathon - how can you run in Oregon and not go past legendary Hayward Field, the Prefontaine memorial, and along our pretty trails on the Willamette river (pronounced Will-AM-eht, not Will-a-metty, BTW).

I've done the Portland marathon, which is nice but a lot of the course goes through the industrial area by the train tracks, so I'd pick Eugene. Though I've also heard good things about the Seaside marathon on the coast (small race, fills up early, very popular, known to have strong winds, very scenic). I haven't done that one myself but several friends have.

Illinois: Chicago Marathon

Missouri: St. Louis Marathon

Both are the "premier" marathons for their state and should provide you with a good experience. The St. Louis Marathon is in April and Chicago is in October (I think) so plenty of time between the events for you to include more marathons.

Good luck!

Other than the debacle last year in Chicago I heard it is a great event.

Thanks for the input.

In Georgia the ING Georgia Marathon in March is the prefered race over the Atlanta Marathon on Thanksgiving Day. The course and weather are nicer, more goodie bag schwag, etc.

Yes, it's here in Atlanta. I did the half this past March. The full and half start at the same time, with the full running the longer outer loop and the half the inner loop. It was pretty cool - we were at mile 11 of the half, when the leaders on the full passed us - amazing!

NH Marathon.
You get to run a good portion of the Mooseman Triathlon bike course.
If you like a nice peaceful run, this is it. I can't imagine there will be too many people along the course as you go.
I'm hoping to do this race in '09.

I've considered doing the Tecumseh Trail Marathon: http://www.dinoseries.com/marathon.html
It takes place in South Central Indiana in December.

First Light Marathon in Mobile, Alabama takes place in early January. It is a small race, but on some beautiful, historic roads often shaded by oak trees which hang over the entire street. It is well supported and the community turns out for the event. I only ran it once, this last year. Also, it is a very inexpensive race (35 dollar entry fee, I think) and I'm pretty sure most if not all of your entry fee goes directly to supported L'Arche Mobile, an organization I've volunteered for (SPAMMER!). But really, its a good race, 60 degree weather generally, and in a beautiful city.

Another good one in WI is the Green Bay Marathon. Race ends in Lambeau Field. It's in May, so it's still a little cool here. Usually good weather!

Tennessee:
Memphis St. Jude Marathon-usually the first weekend in December; flat course, good , cool temps. I've done the half, plan on maybe doing the full this year.
Nashville Country Music Marathon- usually in April, more hills, 30,000-40,000 runners(I think), should be good temps. never done, but everybody I know that has done this one raves about it. Lots of music throughout, good post race partying, sounds similar to Chicago in size and excitement, except for the hills.

Illinois:
Chicago is an awesome race with 40,000+ of your closest friends(yes, Beads, you can try to meet all of them if you wish) Lots of spectator support(1-2 million) and cool areas to run through. Also, good temps.,(normally, although upper 80's really shouldn't have been that bad)

I just might have to try and meet as many as I can.
Maybe we can get an unofficial Trifuel Table at the expo and I'll sit there ;-)

my Uncle lives in Nashville and has some contacts in the country music biz so I am leaning toward that one as my Tennessee marathon.
