Timberman 70.3 bike course

Just wondering if anyone knows what the road conditions are like on the bike course? I have been trying to get up there before the race to check it out, but don’t know if I am going to be able to. I have also read that it is pretty hilly, anyone ever done this course before? any tips would be helpful, I 've been focusing on hills alot during my training so I think I'll be prepared, just wondering if there is any free advice, did some searches but haven't found much. thanks

did it way back in '02 and it was rolling hills EXCEPT for two super steep hilly muthas at mile 11-12 and then on the way back at miles 42-44. keep riding the hills you'll be fine. also the run is not flat so don't forget your hills their either. good luck!

I've done the Timberman the last two years. Get your hill work in for both your bike and run. It is a grinding course. When you get on your bike after the swim the hills don't effect you much. You hit a beast of a hill at the 10 mile mark, it is a gradual down slope until the halfway point, so you are feeling great, but that gradual decline turns into a gradual incline on the way back. I've averaged around 21mph on HIM courses. Going out to the halfway point I go about 24mph, coming back 20-18 depending on the headwind. It is not a "hard" course, it just wears you out. The run is the same deal, grinding. Every year I get done with the race, and just wish I had done more hill repeats and bricks. Don't get me wrong, the race is fantastic, but it will challenge you both physically and mentally.

Thanks for the replies, I guess I could have picked a flatter course for my first HIM, but I must admit I am getting a little pumped right now, a little nervous, but excited at the same time, training on hills has given me a new appreciation for the bike leg.

Any idea, or do you remember what the condition of the roads were like? the reason I ask is because the roads I have been training on are very narrow and not in very good shape(potholes, debris,blind corners), they are basically old country roads, so I really can't let it fly on the descents. I was just wondering if the roads at the course are any better?

sorry it's been a number of years since I've done. but Timberman was a great race when I did and have heard nothing but Great things about this event since. the roads should be fine and so will you - keep training the hills!

I did Timberman last year and will be back for more this year. Bike course is usually in great shape. I have done it a couple of times in training and racing. The only place where it gets bad (road condition wise) is on Frank Bean Road and Country Club Road which are both towards the end of the bike. I would practice getting on the bike and going uphill almost immediately. There is a decent hill coming out of transition so if your legs aren't ready for it you can get into suffer mode pretty quick. Other than that as stated above save some juice for late in the bike because you are going back over the same hills.
