1st tri finish
Congrats on you first race, I'll bet it won't be your last.
Don't get too hung up on where you finished.
Celebrate the fact you finished.
You had a respectable time for the distance.
Keep it up! ;-)
Nothing to it, but to do it
First thing...congrats on completing your first...awesome job
And yes, I'd say 1h30 would be about the norm for that AG (if not a little faster at the top)....the age groups in the 30's are pretty competitive across the board. From what I've seen, other than a little less depth you don't real see drop offs in (especially) top end speed until you get up into the 50s AGs.
But, don't worry about what other people are doing...I'm assuming when you were a couch potato 6 months ago and decided to go for the tri, you weren't thinking I'd really like to train and beat some people. Your goal was about self-improvement...which is obviously evident from your finish/achieving your goals. If you continue in the tri lifestyle, you'll be suprised at how quickly you improve...but worry more about how you improve compared to yourself, not the field. That's whats most important.
We did a sprint this weekend with a 500m swim and the times were between 1h10 and 1h 45. Keep in mind that in your first one, you probably did some things less efficiently than in training just because of nerves and intensity. Personally, I am impressed with the 6 month transition from potatoe to athlete! Way to go! Triathlon is tough. Times really don't matter for your first, the reality is you took on an intimidating and difficult sport and you did it! Good for you! You will take time off that with no problems. Good luck training!
I just completed my first tri. I'm thrilled that I went from couch potato to triathlete in 6 months. I had three goals for this race: don't puke, don't walk during the run and finish under two hours. The good news is I managed all three. I did the 750 meter swim, 22k bike ride and 5k run in 1 hour and 47 minutes. But I can't help but be slightly bummed that I came in last in my age group (women 35-39) and 299 out of 307. Were people in this sprint triathlon particularly fast or is 1 hour and 30 minutes the norm for women in their late 30s?
Awesome job!
You said: "But I can't help but be slightly bummed that I came in last in my age group..."
Ahhh... not only did you finish your first tri but you found a competitor inside yourself. Welcome, you are among friends. :)

Be proud of your accomplishment- how many women age 35-39 can say they completed a triathlon? You will no doubt improve your times if you keep training with your eye on the next race. Enjoy the process!
Thanks guys. What I love most about the triathlon world is how supportive people are. My next race is in two months and I've decided I have two new goals. Shave 5 minutes off my time. I figure I can train more on the bike and easily cut 3 minutes from my time. That leaves me cutting 30 seconds from the swim, run and each transition. My other goal, don't finish last. Thanks for all the encouragement.
your time was fast. what community was that race held in? those people are fast.
The race was held where I live, St-lambert, Quebec. That's a suburb of Montreal. I must admit, part of my motivation was becoming part of my neighbourhood. People around here are super fit.
Great job!
First, AWESOME JOB!!!! The thing that sticks out to me is the competitive spirit that you want MORE! You don't want to finish last next time & you want a better time. Keep that drive up!!! It's always great to see (at least to me) people who push themselves to their limits in order to achieve their goals. Go get it!!!!

It's great that you've found a new goal!
Congratulations on the race. You should also know that you are in one of the most competitive AG's in all of endurance sports, so don't feel too bad about the AG placement. Just run your race, and beat your own personal time goals.
My wife is in the same boat ,, she just finished her first Tri and finished 2 minutes under her goal, she is disappointed with her time but coming from a non athletic backround to this in 6 months is great, she compares herself to me and my friend that do our 50 mile bike rides and run 12 miles the next day and is jealous, you gotta start somewhere, .. Now ask your self about the swim,, what did you do right? what could you improve next time? Bike same questions.. run same thing,, learn from it and keep tri-ing and have fun.. dont beat your self up as there is always some one better unless your name is Lance or Macca or ...
Congrats on your first race, and setting some great goals! To me that is what this sport is about: trying something, learning from it, getting a bit more determination, and getting out there and beating yourself. Of course, in improving you will naturally also beat more people :) Hard work (done wisely) will pay off. Welcome to Trifuel, too!

Sounds like my first race in April, finishing 252 of 264 (and I'm male 25-29 :-) )
Congrats on the start and the finish!
Congrats on finishing your first tri. You said first. Have you done any others since April? Did you improve your time?
Yup, 2 others since and definitely improved.
First was a long OLY where I nearly drowned swimming and almost passed out on the run. Good times :-)
Second was a Sprint. Finished 607 of 783. Better but nearly last in my AG.
Third was to be a Sprint but turned out to be a strange duathlon and finished 89 of 128.
Look forward to your next and focus on improving where you felt weak. For me it was swimming and the run. I just couldn't run faster than a 10 minute mile in training. Swimming was an open water + wetsuit issue. Added hills and sprints to my running and had some more swimming practice and tada! Better times :-)
