my .02
It appears the BIG George never races for himself. He's always been working so others get the win...why dosen't he take a win...? is he not strong enough? He not in the top 50 after today. What's the deal??

thoughts?

domestiques have a tough job...george has been doing since lance joined postal and johan picked lance to lead the team. Plus, george, although he has so much experience with the tour is much better of a one-day rider. Races like Pars-Roubaix and leige-Bastogne-Leige suit him more than the grand tours, although he had a great showing at the tour of cali this past spring!!

He is perfectly capable of competing in many tours...just not the Tour. So he domestiques that race, but is paid back in turn when his team works for him at other races. He's a great example of a team cyclist. One of my favs

Thanks for the info. I don't keep up with the other races so I wasn't aware of his roles in each.
Are the other "tours" televised? where can I find info/schedules?
I did check out his webpage and saw the results from previous races and checked the TDF website under riders history and this is what George did....
2003 47th 1 stage victory
Stage 4 : Joinville > Saint-Dizier

2004 33th 1 stage victory
Stage 4 : Cambrai > Arras

2005 14th 2 victoires d'étape
Stage 4 : Tours > Blois
Stage 15 : Lézat-sur-Leze > Saint-Lary-Soulan

nice job indeed. I wasn't doubting him and do understand the teamwork involved, just wanted to see the guys work for him in the big race.

Cycling doesn't get huge coverage, but the Vs network has "Cyclysm Sundays" typically from 4-6 or 5-7pm on Sundays. They give good coverage, but I wish it would be more. 80hrs a week of Extreme Cage Fighting, you'd think they could show another hour or two of cycling/triathlon.

I thought he got a shot two years ago of being the team leader and going for yellow but fell apart early in the race. Am I wrong?

+1 (and, as cool as i think cycling is, it's just not a bruiser sport the way they advertise it with crashes "summer of red, black & blue")
and if it's not MMA, it's bullriding...uuggh (cool, too, but it's on too much)
AND, my cable group has VS sharing with the Golf Channel on the digital station so sometimes the VS lineup gets bumped

Yeah, we also have problems losing the Versus for Golf Channel, but only on HD.

I read an interview a couple of years ago with the CEO of whatever Versus used to be (sorry, I'm tired, it's midnight) and he said that they get 10x the viewers for pro bull riding over Tour coverage. How depressing is that? And now they have the trashy fighting shows for the frat boys and trailer parks.

Unfortunately cycling doesn't pull in the viewers in the States. I spent two years living in France and over there you get live coverage of every stage from start to finish plus panel discussions afterward. Of course, France is becoming so Americanized now that I'm sure the young French generation will prefer Dancing With the Stars over the Tour soon. The lowest common denominator is infiltrating all cultures. Please pass me a PBR.
