I could have tied this in with the thread on the poor air quality in Beijing, but I feel that it deserves it's own thread. I was going to do my first triathlon this weekend, however, smoke from the wildfires in California have degraded the air quality enough that the race organizers cancelled the event.

I definitely don't feel that I have wasted time training, but I am definitely left with an empty feeling this morning. I was mentally ready. I rode the bike course last weekend, got my first OW swim out of the way, and was feeling more confident with my run then I ever have.

Has anyone else had a race cancelled on them?

That really sucks.

How about the June Lake Tri, it's this weekend... I don't know if you can get in but it might be worth a shot..

I have had a swim portion canceled due to high bacteria and debris in the water or something like that. We had some flooding in north Texas last summer and couldn't get in the lakes.

Bummer either way. Coincidentally, that was my first Tri that turned into a Du

Total bummer. Sorry that you didn't get to race. I hope you can find another fun race soon.

Ditto what ChunkyB said. I have seen you given the option to do a du instead of a tri when current and waves are no coroporating. Search a calendar to see what else is going on.

I was signed up for that race also. It was a blast last year and definitely one of the best races in this region. The organizers and crew did an amazing job. You should do the Pyramid lake sprint triathlon on August 2nd. That would be a great first timer race.

Any thoughts from the group regarding the no-refund policy of the race organizer? At least hand out the race shirts!

I would be pissed if I could not get my money back after the organizers cancelled a race but I think that it is in the fine print when you sign up for it (Act of God stuff). I think alot of the race fees go into getting permits and setting up the race, regardless of if the race is run or not. I would hope though that the director would at least do something like offer a discounted entry into next years race.

Thanks to everyone for the responses.

tsilcyc: Thanks for the race idea, but I wouldn't have been able to make it down even if they would have let me enter.

speedtriple: I think that I will sign up for the Pyramid Lake Sprint.

As far as not giving refunds or race t-shirts, I received an email for the race organizers that everyone who was signed up and paid before the race was cancelled will have their entry fee applied to next years race. An entry form is going to be sent to the address you gave at registration. While we were out of luck for this year, but getting the entry applied to next year is a fairly good deal.
