Attaching Aero Bars to Carbon Fiber Handlebars

I am considering attaching aero bars to my carbon fiber handlebars; however, I am trying to avoid cracking the carbon fiber.

My solution, I think, is to tape up the bars at the attachment point with handlebar tape or the tape used on my rims to protect the tube and then attach the bars over the tape. I do not plan on clamping the bars as tightly to the handlebar as I would with an aluminum handlebar. Just enough that I can rest on the aero bars during long downhills and flat areas. A little movement is OK.

Has anyone had any suggest attaching aero bars to a carbon handlebar?

If anything, id go with some of that grippy padding that comes with brake lights and speedometers and such. Might do the trick. I wouldnt put handlebar tape in there, as ive had the experience of the bars moving around a lot when mounted over tape unless you torque then down real hard, which youre trying to avoid. Really just be careful tightening them. My tribars came with torque specs, yours may have as well. If so, go beg borrow or steal a tq wrench from someone to be sure.

you need to make sure that the bars that you are using are designed for aero bars, otherwise you will crack your bars, tape or not. the problem is compression at two points on an unreinforced bar, which will result in cracking.

there are carbon bars designed for aero bars, but you would need to google them. hope that that helps.

Max just be really careful not to attach them too loosely...if you go down a hill at 40mph and hit a pothole while resting on loose aerobars, you'll (insert gruesome bike crash thought here).

Solid advice. I wouldnt even think of adding aerobars to a carbon road handlebar. Same reasons given above. It just is not worth the risk. They dont recommend adding bar ends to carbon mtn bike handle bars for the same reasons.

Life is short. Play hard and get dirty doing it.
