Timing Question

I have an extremely newbie type question here.

My first race ever is on July 20. As I look at the results from last year, it lists the competitors times as such:

Swim Time
T1 Time
Bike Time
T2 Time
Run Time

I can certainly understand how they come up with the swim, bike, and run times – I’m assuming that the chip that one wears crosses a line and it starts and ends the time. But when does it start and stop the transition times? Thanks!

There is usually a timing mat at or near the entrance and exit of the transition area. The swim time stops when you enter transition, and the bike time begins when you leave. The time in between is your T1 time. similar for Bike to Run = T2 time.

The placement of the mats and the transition area may be different with each race. Some races have an entrance on one side and the exit on the other side to somewhat equalize the timing. Others have one entrance and exit. If you get there early you may be abel to get your transition area is set up where you want(if it is not assigned) That will help improve your T1 and T2 times.
