Ironman Canada 2009
You do have to be there in person to register. Not hard to register if you're there though.
I might register... depending how this year turns out. However, if things keep going the way they are I might be found dead on the course.
I'd love to do it, but I think with grad school and some other training goals I'm going to wait for 2010.

I'm taking the family to Disneyland this summer, so will be registering next year for 2010. That gives me time to lose a few belly inches.
I read in a previous post that alot of IM's give volunteers first dibs for signing up for the next year. I think that's what I'm going to do.
Cheers
I'm signed up for this and will be attempting to finish. I think I'll be waiting a few more years before I do it again, but I'm tempted to sign up for next year. It depends on what the year brings.

Just so you don't freak out--as long as you are in line when registration starts at 9:00 you will get in.

Thanks for the responses. I'll be there for the race, so I'm not too worried about not getting a spot. Volunteering sounds cool too - I'll have to check into it.
unfortunately I messed up and planned a vacation during the race, so I will not be going back to sign up until the following year :(

oh and...we got in line in 06(for last years race-07) at midnight after the race finished, and the line was already a mile long--we camped in line because we were only staying overnight and all the hotels had a 5 night min. If you do this, be aware there are sprinklers that go off at night in the park....funny they go off in circuts so people got wet in waves ahahahahahhaha
Line moves very fast and only takes a few minutes.

wow.. midnight? brings back memories of standing in line for concert tickets.. do you need to be there then? if I show up in the morning would I be out?
I'm totally up for standing in line all night, that has to be a blast.
no, we just did so we could get a bit of sleep, we drove up in the evening and watched the end of the race, and then drove home right after registration. Its 6 hours each way for us. They said if you were in line when registration opened you would get in. It was fun though, I would guess 1000 people did it too. Everyone just sleeps in their spot. Funny I never waited for a concert like that, it amused us that our first "camping in line" was for an Ironman.
funny how we sit in line from midnight on... just to pay >500$ to beat the sh** out of ourselves for the day huh?

ehehehehhe yes. Didnt you scamper in at the last minute there?
Can someone else register for you? And if not, do they check i.d... ;)

no, until 2005 you could but they stopped that. Yes they check id.
Trifuel camp out in 2009 for 2010 reg! :)

I am on my way tomorrow. I am going to head out there around 8:00 pm my time (I live in vancouver about 5 hours away) drive out and fall asleep in line. This is my first Ironman and I was thrown off by the cost (poor student who just got married) but managed to come up with the money. So what are my chances if I am there by midnight to register for 2009
I'll be volunteering until midnight, then doing the same thing - jumping in line and hopefully having a bit of fun waiting for registration to open. You shouldn't have any trouble registering if you get there at midnight based on what I've heard from a few folks who have done it.
Come earlier and cheer some of the late folks in!
You have to be there to register? Gosh, that counts me out. How is someone in Toronto suppose to register in-person for an event that is 4000km away?
go volunteer the year before you want to do it :)
Or there are races that have spots for it -- I don't know which ones, but I know that is what BBB on here has done a couple times.
Mike and I plan to make the trip and volunteer.

Volunteers get first preference...at least they did at IMLP. If they are doing this in Canada I don't know..things are different there ya know. ;)
You get one voucher, they check ID...You meet some great folks standing in line...and a few idiots too.

I'd love to be there to register in person... but it's 4000 kilometers from Toronto. :P
Not really feasible/practical. My only hope of registering for M-dot seems to be Lake Placid, and even that's a pain.
Oh well, that's the price I pay for getting into this later than everyone else I guess. :) Glad it's popular and successful.

Dude! Come to Placid next year and I'll buy you a beer. Volunteer, get stoked and sign up on Monday! If I can drive 9 hours from Maryland you can make the hike from Toronto!

Well depending on how the 1/2 Iron goes next year, I don't have much choice now, do I? :) I'm totally addicted to this sport and you have to do it! ;)

Some races in Canada also have spots for IMC -- but I'm not sure on details on those. BBB has done that I believe.

think petersborough Half IM is a IMC qualifer and possibly eagleman in Md at least they were in the past

2008 NAS QUALIFYING RACES
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
** All qualifying events for 2008 have passed.
2009 qualifying events will be posted in early 2009.
Competitors get to register on Saturday BEFORE the race for the following year. (That's to get you committed before the pain begins, but maybe it's humane since I can tell you, lining up stiff from the race which ended less than twelve hours before is tough.)
Volunteers have a wristband & must show photo ID to register Monday morning for the following year but it is not necessary to camp out as they will be permitted to join the front of the queue in advance of General Registration.
After the volunteers register, General Registration begins, usually by 10 or 11 am. The organizers say that anybody who shows up to line up on the Monday, volunteer or not, will be granted a place in next year's race. They do not accept cash but a cheque is acceptable.
A few years ago I camped out after the race. I left the race area and cleaned up, came back at 3am, pitched my tent as there was a forecast for a storm. I was fast asleep in 83rd place in line when the storm hit. The wind flattened the tent several times. It bounced back up again (fibreglass rods).
The guy next to me had no tent just a sleeping bag and was a drowned rat in the morning.
At about 8am I emerged and the line was already about 600 people down Lakeshore Drive. They respected my place in line while I slept in. I got a coffee from a concession and rejoined the line. No problems.
because they guarantee a spot to anyone who shows up on the Monday morning it is not necessary to camp out anymore. People do it mainly because they have an early flight and need to register as quickly as possible.
Come one come all. This race only gets better.

Duh.
I'm committed for life. I want to be last man standing one day when they have the rollcall at the welcome dinner. It's a compelling bit of drama I wouldn't miss.
Libor and I staked out a table and hoisted the Trifuel flag I brought. Ray (wirebook) found us and we had a few non-trifuelers join us (I invited them to the forum.)
We saw cuds and Big Matt in the morning but they must have eaten elsewhere.

I'm also registered - day before as well.
It was great to meet up with Libor and Geoff!

Alright... '08 was a bust, but I'm in for '09! And I'm gonna freakin rock it! Sorry I didn't come to the dinner. I actually ended up on a ride with a couple of people and lost track of time. By the time I got back it was too late.
Well, I'm in for 2009! Volunteering at the finish was amazing, and it made the registration line super short in the a.m. I think I was in and out before 9am.
I can't wait for next year - this is going to be a blast.
What a day! Volunteered from 7am-midnight and got to see 6 of my friends become Ironman. It was so incredible to work transitions. I got to see the top pro's come in and then the cut off's in each leg. Very sad to see Sister Madonna cross at 17:02 :(
I have my confirmation to register for 09.

It's a slip I got with a reserved number to register between Sept 1-8th. They didn't let us sign up the day after, instead we got placement holders. And yes, it is a promise :D

Do they do that at all the races or is this something special they do at Canada?

I believe they are testing this style of reg for now with intention to apply it to the other IM events going forward but don't hold me to it. It basically allows a "cooling off" period after the hype of the race for both athletes and those inspired to tackle it. This way the race opens up more online spots as inevitably not everyone who takes a certificate signs up.

I don't know, as this is the first IM I have been to. I do know you have to get your confirmation in person the next day to sign up, the race sells out and doesn't allow you to sign up online.

Anyone planning IM Canada 2009? I'm probably going to Penticton to watch this year, and hopefully register for next year. I hear it's a hard one to register for.
