Thanks to a bit of toxic algae in the lake, I might be doing my 1st ever duathlon this weekend (We get final word tomorrow on the water quality, but the beach has been closed for almost a month). The proposed format is 1.25mi run, 16mi bike, 5k run.

What is your strategy for that first run? Do most people go all out or do you try to hold back a bit (like going at a 5k pace)? What effect does that run have on the beginning of your bike?

Any other tips or words of wisdom are welcome!

All I've ever heard about duathlon is to not go too hard on the first run. You could also go check out Tri Talk Episode 56 (it's a free podcast). That one was all about duathlons, and was hosted by some champion triathlete. He gave some percentage of how close your first and second runs should be in pace or whatever, but the gist of it to me was that you shouldn't go balls out on the first run because it will hurt you much more than it will help you.

Good luck, btw.

Hey, that's not in Wisconsin, is it?

It depends on where you want to finish. I typically want to finish in the top 3 in my age group, so I don't want to fall too far behind on the first run, so I try to stay in contact with the leaders so that I am aware if someone is in front of me. However, if you feel like you get stronger as the race goes on, definitely save your legs a little bit, but remember, its like that nike commercial with Lance-- "You're faster than you think," so don't hold yourself back too much. But, the most important thing is to run YOUR race. If you do that, you'll be happy no matter what happens. I led a race the whole way one time, but got beat in the last 100 meters. I knew I could have beaten the guy if I had sat behind him and let him lead, but I wouldn't have been as happy with myself because it wasn't MY race.

Yup. Pewaukee. It will be my 5th time doing that race, but first time as a du.

Du's are fun. I typically take the first run at a moderate pace, and hit the second with whatever I have left after the bike. If it's only 1.25 miles, I'd probably give it a little more gas that if it were a 5k. 1.25 will go by quickly.

Hey PJT

Now that it is officially a Du and the first run is 1.5. Only piece of advice is to make sure that you don't run into a tall skinny 17 year old girl! We are doing it as a relay and my daughter is taking the first run, so don't be tripping her or anything!

See ya at the race!

Don't swim rules apply for that first run? You know, elbows, kicking, running over, etc? ;)

Only if you are running in your wetsuit and goggles.

It would be fun to toe the line in a wetsuit and say: "I missed the pre race course talk. Anything important I should know about?"

Best of luck to Team RV. Mrs. PJT and I will be starting in wave 4 with the rest of Tri Wis.

I would love to see that ... on a related note, as I was walking to the swim start with my friend, he turned to me and asked me (within earshot of a couple of other racers) "am I supposed to have my tri shorts on under my wetsuit?" Needless to say he got a couple of strange looks before realizing he was joking.
