perpetuem in special needs bag
Perpetuem has a life of about 5 hours (i have been told), so you would want it as powder. I had 2 bottles full and frozen on my bike for IMAZ and the second bottle went sour and caused me to vomit on the third leg of the bike. I did have a spare bottle with powder at SN, but I did not stop. Next time, I will carry two powder bags with me and mix it on the course for a total of 3 bottles. I would avoid having a really thick mix in the first bottle and also avoid the chaos of the special needs area. I carried hammer gel in the GU flask on the bike as well, which saved me when I got sick of the perpetuem.
I hope that helps.
Finishing the race is the only thing that validates the cause.
I don't use perpetuem, but I do use carbopro+nuun which is another powder+tablet. Personally, I try not to rely on the special needs bag but have had it as a backup plan. I mix a couple bottles extra strong and put them on my bike, and it should be all the calories I need for the race. When I do use special needs as a backup, I put another bottle with the carbopro+nuun in it, no water. I figure if I have to go to the backup plan the extra minute for adding water at an aid station will not be my biggest concern.
If you can't have bottle concentrated enough to last you all day, I'd go with the baggie in a pocket solution. Just have a plan for how you plan to get it to the waterbottle: stopping and pulling the top off? Using it in your aerobottle? etc.
To quote Oliver Cromwell, "trust in God, but keep your powder dry." I am planning the same thing for IMKY. I plan on carrying 2 bottle of double strength Perpeteum on the bike and then two more in my SN bag. I had thought about freezing them but we should probably go with powder just to be on the safe side--Perpeteum is pretty awful even when it isn't warm and sour.

I use perpeteum for my IMs and I mix up a single bottle with all the calories I need for the bike (you have to use a blender to get it to mix). It's like drinking paste (yummy!) but I don't have to worry about mixing new on the bike (perpeteum doesn't mix very well to begin with... see blender comment above). After having some of the paste, I do drink a lot water so it probably helps keep me hydrated.
Perpeteum is far from perfect but is one of the few things I can keep down while riding. I wish I had an iron stomach.

For IM Austria last summer, I used Sustained Energy on the bike and run. I filled a 24-oz Polar bottle half-way with water and froze it the night before the race, and in the morning added enough SE for the ride (I was also using Hammer bars). For the run, the night before I mixed the SE and water in a small bottle (the kind that you use with a hydtration belt) and froze the whole thing. I had it waiting in an insulated lunch bag in the T2 bag. That seemed to work for me. Good luck!

when you put perpetuem in special needs bag, do you just put the powder in there and then fill up with water at the special needs area or can you already have the water in? or would it be easier to just have a bag of the powder and put it in my back pocket in T1 and pour it into a water bottle at some point? is the special needs usually around mile 50? im doing IMKY
