Hello All,
Although I have done plent of TRIs, this weeked in Rhode Island will be my 1st ocean swim - have done lakes, rivers etc including the Hudson, Schuykill, Choptank river, but a bit nervous about this one for some reason...looks like the swim in RI is in a cove..? so perhaps the current/waves won't be too bad? I imagine it will be like the Choptank at Eagleman which I thought was a real tough swim (2005), but I guess we'll see...any veteran ocean swimmers with some advice? Thanks...macker

Same here doing the RI this weekend and never did an ocean swim. Took my wetsuit out to Huntington Beach, CA this last weekend to mess around (man those waves are brutual); btw the cove shouldn't be bad at all not many waves.

First ocean swims are scary.

First- put your wet suit on. Whenyouapproach the water get water in your wet suit via the neck. Dnk down a few times. Get out past the breakers and lay on yur back. Feel the current where is it pulling you. When you first put o the suit you can feel constrictive. warm up and exit the water. This time dolphin through the waves. Youdo know that when the waves comes you go under the wave, pop up and do it again if you have another wave.

Know the race course and if you can swim before do so. Of course the above should be completed with a swim buddy or someone on asurfboard for saftey issues. You never swim alone.

Waves can be brutel or calm you don't know till race day. Best of luck.

P.S. Body Glide or Sport Shield around the neck and arms.

Race morning make sure you get water in the suit, warm up and know how you are going to sight. I hope this helps.

Lots of info on this sight.

macker-

You will be fine; my buddy swims at Roger Wheeler Beach all the time no real current/waves; current water temp 72. Think of it this way a fresh water swim with salt.
