As it says, how should I travel with the CO2 inflators if I travel with plane?
Should I put them in the checked luggage or put them in the hand baggage or should I leave them home (if I'm not allowed to do either?)

Thanks

I flew with Austria Airlines ans SwissAir in Europe last year and had them in checked baggage. No problems.

+1 on checked baggage. I had a friend a few years ago get pulled aside for the CO2 cartridges in his carry-on to fill out some TSA form. I think his bags have been searched every time he's flown since then.

CO2 cartridges are not allowed in carry on or checked baggage. They are not even allowed on cargo flights ... have a look at any mail-order site and you'll notice that they can only ship them by ground.

Here is link to the TSA page that discusses this.

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/compressed_gas.shtm

Notice their first comment:

"Compressed gas cylinders are allowed in checked baggage or as a carry-on ONLY if ... the cylinder is no longer sealed (i.e. the cylinder has an open end)." In other words, you can carry your empties if you want to.

you will get busted for sure with carry on's. Probably won't get caught in checked bags, but they are prohibited. I have never been to a race that did not sell C02. they usually have the really good ones that cost 3x as much as the ones at your LBS. :)

Finishing the race is the only thing that validates the cause.

Yeah, don't put them on a plane. Especially with how tough they can be on checking stuff now. I have heard of people getting pulled from planes because of it, and then missing a flight. Maybe it's not always caught, but it's not worth the risk to me. Pick up a couple at the race, or at an LBS near the race. Afterwards donate them to a local racer or club that has a tent setup, or drop 'em back off at the LBS on your way out.

The last time I flew with my bike I took out my CO2 cartridges because I was afraid of what would happen with pressure during the flight. I accidently missed the extra one I keep in my bike bag and it traveled both ways without blowing up.

This can be a fine if you fly with Co2 in the baggage. If found or explodes, the go through every bag or bike box and who knows if you get all you stuff back. By CO2 at the expo. You should only need 2.

I have traveled to Hawaii the past four years and reminded everytime the team travels as a whole. I also take shoes, helemt, cap and goggles on the plane, because if my luggage gets lost these items I don't want to replace prior to race day! Rememeber nothing new on race day!

thanks for all the comments. I decided not to bring them with me, and then just find a store to buy some new ones. I have 3 weeks before my race, so I should have plenty of time. And of course, on one of my first rides I got a flat even before I left my hotel. And then halfway through my ride, my brother got a flat. So now we're out of tubes as well (he has a realy small pump so we could inflate the tubes, it just took like forever.

Better then the fine... Plan ahead and look for the bike store that is usually sponsering the event. Sometimes they will deliver to the hotel whatever is needed. Sorry about the flats.

I have seen race day people use their cO2 and have a pump. Luckly they had the pump.
