KitKat-
The race is on July 13th in RI so it will be hot and humid but the race starts at 6am. Haven't trained with the infinit yeat but all the gels yes. gels go down easy for me.

3 questions:

How long are you anticipating for the bike and the run times? What is the anticipated temperature? Do you plan to drink any sports drink during the run?

EDIT: 1 more question--do you know your appoximate sweat rate on the bike?

Don't know sweat rate; not a heavy sweater.
Did a 1/2 marathon recently and did it around 1:44 min
Bike not 100% sure a little slower on the bike; never timed the 56 miles before
Temp will probably be around 70ish-low 80s on bike and high 70's-mid 80's on run. New England weather is nuts

I would try to eat breakfast more than 90 minutes before the start of the race or maybe don't eat quite as much. And if you are looking at a longer bike time, as in 3 hrs or more, you might want to add another gel during the bike. Just don't ingest any near the end of the bike or your stomach might get angry with you at the beginning of the run.

I think you're OK on the run as long as you are drinking enough water with those gels. I like to do 2 gels during an HIM and rely on sports drink on the course, but 4 gels gets you roughly the same number of cals and should be plenty of energy for a sub 2:00 half mary.

On the bike, test that Infinit this weekend to make sure you can stomach it.

People sweat more than they think on bike rides because the air evaportes the sweat much faster. Assuming you are biking in the 2:30 to 3:00 bike range, you may be just a touch low on fluids and a touch light on calories. I think Inifinit says to start at 24 oz/hr. I go closer to 40 oz an hour or more in hot humid weather, but I am a heavy sweater. I'd say take 1 more gel and leave room in your plan to grab a bottle of water at an aid station and top off your aerobottle later in the ride. Consider taking an endurolyte or 2 after you've gone through the infinit if it is really humid.

It should go without saying, but because of one recent thread I'll say it: be sure to thank the volunteers and don't curse them out if a bottle needs to be opened on the fly :)

Can I ask your height and weight?

By the looks of it breakfast #1 is around 700 kcal, if your bagel is around 250. If your race starts at 6am that should be plenty. In fact if it were me I'd get up around 3am eat 70% of my calories and then eat the other 30% an hour before the race. That's only because my tummy can only handle so much food at one time. Do you have an iron stomach? Or do you have GI issues?

I'd advise bringing Hammer Endurolyte tabs with you on the bike and have some at T2. Hot and humid weather is no fun. It's better to have more salts on hand if you need them.

I would highly discourage using Infinite, only because you have not trained with it. This could seriously ruin your race. Not worth 4-6 months of training IMO. You'll probably need more water on the bike as well. I'm only 130 lbs and consumed 72 oz, I was never bloated either.

Prerace shoudl be about 400 calories. I think you have more.

You have 450 calories listed for the bike. You need 240-280 calories an hour... you're short unless you're doing it in two hours.

It's tough to eat on the run, 4 gels with 8oz water each will get you through but still short. With a 1:44 half marathon, you're looking at a 2:00 half IM half marathon.

I hope my numbers are right... I'm rushing out...

What have you trained with for sports drink on your long bikes and long runs? At less than 2 weeks out, I'd say use what you've trained with instead of the Infinite. You can try that out in your training for your next race.

If you've trained with the rest of it (breakfast, etc.) you should be fine. I'm assuming you're taking in some sports drink on the run? If not, you'll need to make sure that the gels you're using have plenty of electrolytes, or else take something like the Endurolyte tablets.

Where are you getting your numbers? Who says 400 kcal pre race? And 300 kcal of infinite and 3 gels = 570-630 kcal on the bike. Where does 450 come from?

Kat-
I'm 6'1 185 pounds bf around 5%.

Yeah my bike looks like around 630kcal; which I think should be fine. I have an iron stomach (unless I am on a rollercoaster or I am done).

I can consume 4 gels on the run did this during my half marathon. (So this should be ok) Going to use my fuel belt for the run.

Sounds like your set then. I would probably pack an extra gel or two in your tri suit "just in case" you have an energy drop. Are you still going to take the infinite? (please say no) If so do you know how much sodium it has? Also remember what may have worked on a hald marathon may not work on a half marathon after a 56 mile bike ride, the body changes needs. I'm sure you've done long bricks....so go again, go with what your body knows on like training.

I think I will use the infinit once before the race to see how my stomach deals with it. The sodium level is around 300 calories and 379.18 sodium.

I shouldn't post when I'm rushing out. My math is wrong.

Bike = 300 + 3x100 = 600 - Still short.

Breakfast: Sizes may vary and I read he's a big fellow so he'll probably want more. Average numbers are 500-700 for pre-race. Early braekfast plus in the hour prior to with a sports drink & gel. Breakfast should be low glycemic index foods in order to have slow energy release.

On the breakfast, you'll see ranges that go as high at 1200 calories. Some suggest all liquids. The best thing to do is test this out prior to your big race if you are able to.

Tweak accordingly.

I've just started using Infinit and I love it. I can't tolerate Gatorade or Cytomax but the Inifinite goes down great. They have some hints about using it concentrated for longer events that you might want to look at.

Just make sure you try it before race day. That isn't the time to find out you hate it or it hates you.

Good Luck!

I'll be in RI too. Make sure you do a long bike with Infinit just in case. And on the run, 4 gels may get to you in a HIM although it works in an open Half Marathon...so you may be forced to take some gatorade in on the run, but you can play it by ear and see how you are runnig and feeling. No solid food on the bike? - I like a cliff bar on the bike..just to get some solid food in early.....and I use ENSURE as my majori caloric intake on the bike...love the taste, goes down easy and hi calorie content. Finally, i was going to say that is a HUGE breakfast but you are not small (I am at 5'7" 155)...best wishes and see you up there!

I too will be at the Providence Half. My nutrition plan seems simpler, and I have been using it in training...

Breakfast...bagel, banana, OJ, at around 3:30 AM

Sport Drink on the way up from Connecticut where I live.

Bike...1 1/2 PB and J sandwiches, cut into 6 mini sandwiches, and 6 clif shots, 48 oz of Cytomax. Every 15 min, liquid. Every 8 miles, mini sandwich and a Cliff shot.

Run...alternate race provided gatorade and water at each aid station. Gel if necessary. Goal is about 5 1/2 hours.

This is my first race, and if this plan catastrophically fails, I know for the next one. See you there, good luck and enjoy!!
