Swimming Kick
That sounds like the classic "two beat kick" that many distance swimmers use. I say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it!

For a triathalon, I plan to kick only to keep my legs / lower body from sinking and dragging me down.
You shouldn't be trying to get propulsion out of the kick so much. Your legs are much more efficient on the bike and run so save them for that. Kick enough to keep your body rotating and your legs up, that's it.
Save your legs & the oxygen they'll burn up with a big kick.
For me it depends if I'm wearing the wetsuit or not. The wetsuit acts on my body position almost the exact same as a pull bouy, therefore minimal kickin. No wetsuit, minimal kicking x2. Either way I'll usually top out between a 4-6 beater.
Weary is the path that does not challenge.
That's a lot more kicking than I do, especially if I'm in a wetsuit.
Personally I also try to save my legs for the bike and run, but I've heard that to get a good swim time you do have to kick a bit. I'm quite long and lean, so if I don't kick with some effort, I drag my heavy legs through the water (a wetsuit is a blessing in this regard).

+2 - It's a two beat and don't change a thing if it's working. Only thing you might want to do is kick a little more at the end of the swim to get some blood to your legs before you stand up and try to walk/run.

What an animal!!

I currently kick only one time for each time one of my hands enters the water (one beat kick?). I get very little propulsion out of my kick. Should I work on kicking more or just try to save my legs during a race?
