I am signed up for a Total Immersion Swim seminar this weekend. Has anyone attended one of these? My hope is that it will be the magic pill I have been looking for to improve my times. I have zero swim background. Is it worth the money?

I am signed up for Nashville TI in 2 weekends. I have several IM friends that have taken the course and praise it with every breath!! It is worth the money according to them.

I swam (fought thru the water, trying not to sink) this morning and am VERY excited to get the much needed help.

Good Luck and let us know how it goes.....

Please keep us updated! I have been debating going for the last year or so and there is finally one in Ohio this year. Please tell us what you think when you get back.
The guy that bought my Giant from me went to the camp and said basically it was that little magical pill (no... not viagra) you mentioned above.

GOOD LUCK

I would be interested in your opinion of the whole experience when it's over also. I've been doing TI drills for a little over a month now ( twice a week ), and have also purchased the DVD, book, and flip charts. Keep in mind that TI isn't necessarily going to make you a faster swimmer, just a more efficient one. If your balance and stroke are real bad, they'll probably be able to help you become more efficient and that would hopefully add to a little more speed. Right now I've went from a 19-21 25yd stroke count (~16 min. 1000yd) to a 17-19 stroke count and a little slower 1000yd ( ~30 sec. slower ). The goal is to be more efficient so when you get out of the water you've conserved more energy for the other two events. I'm a believer and am dedicating my swim time to these drills 2 out of the 3 swim days a week in the hopes of lowering my stroke count to 15-17 per 25yds. Let us all know how it goes.

i tried TI and i think i did a couple things. it taught me balance and some swim drills and techniques that were very good. overall if you talk to a real swimmer and show them what you have learned they will laugh at you. Terrys " swim downhill " mantra is like me telling a big heavy guy when he runs to imagine himself weighing 100 pounds less. Swim with a masters team and get a good masters coach.

To be Honest what helped me the MOST was doing Bikram Yoga. I am not joking.

For all my life, I sank in the water. Whether I was a skinny kid, or a bloated couch potato. Within a couple of weeks of reading "Total Immersion," I was floating.

The simple truth is that the traditional methods of teaching swimming often ignore some very important principals. Should you swim belly down, or on your side? Where should your recovering arm be when you start to pull? Should your head be up, down, or somewhere in between? Ask a few swim instructors, and you'll likely get different answers. TI's answers worked for me, and they work for many others.

I completed the seminar this weekend. Here's the skinny.

The seminar was great. It was well organized and very informative. They provide a video analysis of your stroke both before and after the training. Everyone in attendance showed drastic improvement.

You do not leave the seminar as a phenomenal swimmer. Rather, the instructors provide you with the drills and knowledge to become a phenomenal swimmer. Once you leave the class is when the real work starts. Weeks of repetive drills are necessary to really ingrain the TI method.

All told, I am gald I went. I have vastly improved my stroke and have clear goals to work toward during base training. And of course you get a free T-shirt

Very interesting comments from everyone. From a different post, I have gottent the opinions of Hitman and MIchaelRobinson and appreciated their comments very much. As they know, I am a beginner swimmer at age 41. My legs sink very quickly even with what I believe to be the correct head position. I have done some research on the TI program and wasn't sure if the money would be well spent at the level I'm at. I currently can go 50 yards before I need to hold onto the wall. I know a lot of my energy is wasted on thinking WAY to much--a common problem of mine in everything...which leads to stiffness and bad form. Wish I could control that brain of mine.

Q: Is this a course that I should consider going to? There is one in Chicago early March and I'm sure I'd have to sign up right away. Input from beginners like me that have taken the course will be appreciated.

Scott,

I just got back from TI last night...Absolutely excellent. I swam this morn before teaching my spin class and, for the first time ever, did not want to get out of the pool.

There were mostly triathletes in the class of 20, but the skill level and ages were across the board. You would fit in very well and would feel very welcome. Everyone was nice and supportive. The coaches were excellent in giving constuctive feedback to really help.

I highly recommend TI for everyone and I am actually planning to teach my children this summer.

I wish I could sneak off to the gym at lunch today to swim, but work is in the way....I actually love swimming now!!!
