IMWI vs. IMKY
I strongly believe that the best IM for a first timer is the one you get most excited about. There is no "easy" course, and it does depend on your strengths and weaknesses as to which course is easier for an individual. So if the swim is your thing, and the IMWI one sounds better, go with that.
I've only done IMKY, and I did love it, but the swim was very different from my other IMs since there was no mass start. This had good and bad. Since everyone started at their own time it was impossible to know where you were in your AG/overall/etc. But there was also no washing machine.

There is no "easy" course . . .
Any-hoo, kylie is right. Do the race that feels right. So if IM Moo sounds like the swim would suit you better, do Wisconsin. (I've done Wisconsin, but not Louisville). One thing I loved about Moo is the Frank Llyod-Wright designed pavilion overlooks the entire swim in Lake Monona (sp?), so it is really spectator friendly. You said you read a bunch of race reports, so I don't need to rehash it here. One thing that is cool is the camera work: On the run and finish at Moo they pictures so the state capitol is in the background. (The Wisc. state cap building is a replica of the US Cap building. Cool pics.)
which would be better for first timers.
Both courses are different and I don't think one caters to first timers better than the other. My first IM was Brazil, my last IM was Florida. This past weekend I went and did the IMWI bike course for the 1st time, WOW! I'd say Brazil or Florida would be easier than IMWI. I will ignore the 20+ mph winds we had on the second half of the 2nd loop of the bike course. It depends on what you have for training. We don't have rolling hills like that here in MN to train on (this didn't seem to matter too much since I've also done IM Switzerland and that has some big climbs. We had 10 IM newbies from our tri club do this race as well and they all finish even with the challenges faced). Oh yeah and the wacky weather possibilities could be extremely hot, except for last year.
We did one loop of the run course, that was good fine. I don't know much about IMKY but I heard it can be hot. We wanted to do a swim, but couldn't because of the raw sewage that was dumped into the lake.
I'm not sure about IMKY, but IMWI would require a trip there to register a year in advance.
Don't pick a race that's easy, pick a race that excites you and will challenge you. That's what IM racing is about, being challenged and conquering the course no matter what. Yes, convenience helps when it comes to seeing the course and training on the course and registering but still.
best of luck...

Have done IMWI twice - not done IMKY (yet).
The swim in Lake Monona is nice.
The bike course is a hilly. Rollers, rollers and more rollers. None of the hills are really tough on their own. Just do about 40 hills per loop and that can really bite ya on the second loop - if hit the first loop too hard. So not the easiest course to settle in on a rhythm.
The run is relatively flat. Goes in and out of the Capitol area - even get to run inside Camp Randall Stadium and do a lap around the football field.
The whole course is pretty spectator friendly - especially as each leg is 2 loops.
They even run a shuttle from the start/finish area out to Verona where the bike loop starts - to move spectators there and back. There is really some incredible crowd support there and on the couple bigger climbs.
Great fan support - really enhances the experience.

And in a similar way that RV talked about IMWI, here is IMKY:
Swim -- the river really wasn't that bad. You just have to be smart about where you swim because of current.
Bike is rolly -- there wasn't much flat but there weren't any big climbs either.
Run is flat.
Also a spectator friendly course with the out and back of the run and multiple bike loops and although not a shuttle MANY people make it out to the area where there is a small town the bike course goes through.
We had the same waiter at a hotel near the finish before and after the race, and he had been watching and spotted us. Nothing like having someone you never met cheering just for you. I really got the feeling that there was local support (especially since the whole thing finished in a covered mall area. And that finish was amazing -- awesome crowd support since they could sit at restaurants along the last 100m with a beer and cheer all day :)

BS on the run course being flat. The second time around the hill behind the campus looked freaking huge. Heck, by the last few miles it seemed like there were more hills then on the bike. (Actually it is fairly flat, just after 10hrs every little rise seemed monumental). And as for running in the stadium, that novelty wore off 10 steps into the run. I thought it would be neat but there are basically no fans in the stadium and you are running on the artificial grass that is spongy and not nice to run in.
But as far as support on the rest of the run most of the marathon is well supported. Running up and down state street with all the people out at all the restaurants on either side is really cool. As for the bike course, there is a lot of just rolling farmland countryside but there are a couple of really cool spots. Like RV said, you family can take a bus out to Verona (they have shuttles that leave a few times an hour) and when you get into verona the whole main st is a chute with fence panels on each side lined with spectators cheering you on. Then, there are two steep hills later on in the loop that are lined with spectators. It's similar to the Tour De France where they line both sides of the road cheering and part as you climb. That part really was fun to ride and you forget you are on a climb.
I've also talked to a couple of people that have done IMKY though and they seemed to really like it too.

+1 Which race has the coolest photo ops is the best way to pick them.
Thanks for the advice, I wasn't really going for the "easier" of the two, just if there was some factor I wasn't considering being new, b/c logistically they are about equal.
It has been said a couple times about racing the one that excites me more, which I really didn't think about and is good advice... so I think I am going to go for IMWI. I have a cousin who just moved to Madison so I think I'll go and volunteer this year and sign up (registration at the event is guaranteed, correct?)
BTW, speaking of running in stadiums, the Indy Mini Marathon (HM) before the Indy 500 includes a lap around the Speedway. Pretty cool, but a lot longer than you'd think, the first time I ran it the 2.5mi track seemed endless. The race used to finish there.
Thanks and wish me luck!
If anyone else is doing IMWI, I'll be the one with the oldest bike there...

The IM race with the best photo op is the one you WIN. Guaranteed you'll be on the cover of several top named magazines. :)

I've run it twice (2006 and this year). The speedway portion is cool. I especially like it because once you come out, you're almost done!

Hello, I used to post here a little last year before my first HIM, and got really good advice (thanks). I'm doing the same HIM (Muncie Endurathon) in a couple weeks and really looking forward to it as I'm in better shape this year.
Anyway, I'm building up to an IM in 2009 and am thinking of IMKY or IMWI as my first and would like to solicit your opinions on both. I tried some searching and found plenty of info on each one individually, but not so much comparing the two or which would be better for first timers. Sorry if this is a repeat discussion.
I'm in Indianapolis so travel to each is not really an issue. I'm leaning towards IMWI b/c I would rather not swim in a river (fav leg), but all RR's from IMKY were really positive.
