I typically don't write race reports nor do I have a tag along photographer since TheShiba couldn't make it out so this will be short. I have a blog which is mostly notes to myself on lessons learned for my race. You can read that here if interested:

But here are a couple of things worth mentioning in this race.

Finally a warm weather race for me this year (90 degrees and humid)! I am a warm weather person for sure.

The swim was on a shallow inlet of a river and it was a two lap triangle course. On the back leg of the triangle there were weeds growing up almost to the surface. As you swam through (no wetsuits) you could feel them brushing against you and against your arms in your catch. It was very freaky for sure.

Right at mile 15 of the bike I feel something hit my thigh. I look down and there is a bee on my leg. STING! Then I smack him away. (I hope he ends up on somebody's windshield). This was definitely a distraction for a while as I see a nice little bump swell on my leg (no I am not allergic). Finally got my concentration back and ignored it. (Until the race was over then I got to whine all about it to anyone who would listen.)

I got my legs under me pretty quick on the run but still was hurting for the first 3 miles or so. Right around the half way mark I picked up my pace and I started feeling better - not so much the legs but overall.

There is a big downhill going back into the park to the finish. After watching Macca's video on Wildflower, I tried to do the same things (albeit much slower) and let the legs and hips go. It worked sort of - good speed but bloody toes.

Here are the numbers:

(Overall/Age Group)
Swim: 28:52 (52nd/7th)
T1: 2:35 (17th/2nd)
Bike: 1:05:47 (13th/2nd)
T2: 0:52 (26th/4th)
Run: 45:02 (27th/3rd)
Overall time 2:23:05 (20th/3rd)

Thanks for the report! I need to do this race some time ... General Smallwood is my 2nd cousin (8 generations back).

Awesome report.

As a side note, I don't think Smallwood would be a good location for the Man Tri. I'm just sayin.

They give you :30 seconds for every generation. You should do well!

Good job! I'd be super happy with a 2:23! That's a great course...But I don't remember the SAV (sub aquatic vegetation) from the races previous incarnation as the Spud Triathlon...but then it was a one lap swim.

I did the sprint version of this race. Had a good time. The weeds were not as bad as last year, but yep they were still there.
