P90X... anyone? anyone?
I don't but my SO does - triwidow - as do a bunch of friends. They love these workouts!
Bought it in Dec of 2007, and I made to about day 40. In that time I went from around 10-12 pullups, to 15. Not sure about pushups or crunches, but I dream of being about to do the mason twist at the end for the entire time with no breaks.
Sometimes I think it would be nice to take 90 days off of triathlon training, and follow their plan. However, I'm not thrilled about their diet. 60% protein, 20% fat, 20% carbs for a few weeks is crazy.
the diet... yeah I modified a tiny bit to keep my energy up for tri training. But in that process found that I was really going overboard on carbs. That may be why I could run all day but had a belly like a frat boy.
It took me until week 7 before I could finish the Ab workout, mason twists and all. When I finally did I was so happy I did a little dance.

Video please.
I can't wait to order it after my last race this year. I have some friends that have done it, and really been happy with the results. I'm going to order it right after Sept. 21...
Did you take the before photo and any progress photos ? :)
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
I did take the before photos, and a thrity day photo that is not as impressive as I would like. Getting lean has always been a fight for me. Becuase I sit at a desk most of the day I need slightly fewer calories than the P90X food guide suggests, even though with tri training I burn more than they estimate for exercise.
So I'll post my before and after photos when the full 90 days is up. I guess if I just said that it means I have to hunker down about my diet! Yikes!
Just started the program so far so good. I am doing tri training and p90x with the diet. My only issue with tri training is I don't maintain the stregtht I need for firefighting. My goal is to mix the two and hopefully stay strong and still run fast.
There are entire fire dept. doing p90x to stay in shape. I have never heard anything bad about the program and from most firefighters I don't think eating high protein for a couple of weeks is a bad thing. I will post before and after photos when done.
Ya! I'm going to do it after Sept. This I gotta say:
Pics or it didn't happen.
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
Work has become absolutely crushing, and my training schedule has fallen to pot. After the NYC Tri, I couldn't really get into gear with my training and I've at best sputtered.
So.. I did it and ordered P90X today instead of waiting till the end of Sept. I think I may effectively bag the end of the season for racing and do this instead. I'm psyched to get it.
A friend of mine, a former Cat 1 racer told me he's gotten it, been through the first 90 cycle and has never been stronger. He through me over the edge! I'll update after I start.
To tri or not to tri - that's not a question at all!
I finished the 90 days, and had good results. My body composition didn't change as much as I would have liked. But it's my own fault... I got pretty lax about the diet in the last 3 weeks and topped it off with a week in Vegas.
But paticularly in the core I feel much more able to push hard when running and biking. love it. I'll do it again this off season but substitute running/riding for plyo/kempo workouts.
I have either Power 90 or Power 90x in the works for after this tri season i.e., beginning of October. A buddy of mine did Power 90x with amazing results.
Any thoughts on whether I can just "jump in" and start with Power 90x vs. having to start with Power 90 first?
Also, my thought is that when doing the Power program (90 or 90x), I will still keep swimming and running, but ratchet it back a bit --I currently swim 5xs per week about 1800-2400 yds per workout, and run 4xs per week including a speed workout day, a long run 8+ miles, and then the other day (or days) is 4-6 miles. So my thought would be ratchet the swim frequency back to 3-4 days with the same amount of yardage, and the run would be 3xs per week --one long (8+), the other two 4-5. For those of you that have completed the Power series does that seem plausible? Or should I just bag the swim run training for the 90 day period?
Thanks!
Depends what you want to accompish. If you want to add a little size (not talking Arnold-like here) then running really takes a metabolic toll and limits your results. But if you want mostly to gain strength you can do more tri training.
P90X has three versions included: Classic, Lean, and Doubles. The Doubles just adds cardio workouts. I just ran/rode instead of doing the cardio workout. The Lean version is less taxing and concentrates more on core work, which would leave even more resources for tri training.
There is a short fitness test for P90X, if you can do that I'd do the X. They list minimums that you should be able to do to be ready. I think it's like 4 pull-ups, and a hand full of push ups and some other stuff. (can't remember... it's not very demanding). I'd say go for P90X... but I don't know much about Power90.
Despite a good background of riding, I found the legs days to be very hard. It was tough to get a great ride or run in the day after legs. It's almost all body weight exercises but it's a lot of them.
I don't know anyone that did the Power 90, so I can't compare, but I think that an active person will be able to jump into the P90X plan. You will get sore, but I don't see a reason to think that P90 is prereq for P90X.
I'm now in the rest week of Phase II. To be fair, I'm tired of being sore all the time, but making progress. I'm looking forward to being done and mixing it up a little more with my tri base training. I like the suggestion someone made before about skipping the cardio and Kenpo workouts in favor of riding/running or swimming and keeping the rest of them in the mix. But I'll experiment after I finish the third phase.

I did P90X for a month or so in the early part of this year (before I started getting serious about triathlon training). I ended up injuring my shoulder by pushing too hard. My doc told me not to do any exercises above the shoulder (presses, push-ups). He said he tells everyone over 40 to quit with those things. I said...time to find a new doc.
Since starting tri training I still do the P90X weight workouts. I've modified them significantly. I still can't do more than a few pull-ups so I do pull-downs on a cable machine. That is tough when I'm traveling as every cable machine has a different weight standard (doesn't someone calibrate these things).
Lately I've customized the weights even further so I can get it done in 30 minutes. Not as serious as the whole-hog workout but still effective.
If you've got the time I definitely recommend it.

So I've been sidelined with a bad case of runners knee for a while and decided to take a chance on these infomercial workout videos called P90X and treat it as a late off season. As it turns out I'm really quite enjoying it.
My run fitness is down, but that was going to be the case anyways due to the injury. But my bike fitness is about the same as before with much less riding. I'm about the same weight but leaner at day 56 of 90. I can do 60% more pull ups, 30% more push ups, I'm a ton more flexible, and I can do about 110% more crunches. The core work has really helped in that my back no longer hurts after a hard run. best of all: after helping some buddies move this weekend everyone else complained aobut how sore they were. I was not :-)
Anybody else ever done this?
