training for more than one race

I was wondering if anyone had input on how to work a training schedule around several races. It seems that 90% of the training advice out there is for people doing one major race and they do not go into how to incorporate several smaller races into the schedule. For example...I am training for a half ironman at the end of the season but I will also do 3 or 4 sprint races. Should I be treating these sprints as training sessions? Should I be tapering for the sprints even though it cuts into my half iron training schedule? Any advice?

me myself would train thru them the Half is most important race and the sprints (for me at least) are just a training day. unless doing well at the sprints is a priority I'd just use them as a training day

I second what Joe_H says...

I build my season off my "A" race and the use my "B" and "C" races as just training or race but understanding that a PR will probably not happen. Sprint training is far different then 1/2 training. I'd focus on your HIM and have fun on your sprints.

I have 7 races on the schedule this year. All Sprint and Oly (2 down and 5 to go). Roughly one per month through race season here in Virginia. Like people said, I do have my A races that I focus more so I look at a few of the other races to work on certain things. I do taper down for each one and take a day or two to recover after with some light training.

I would figure out what your 'A' race is and base your training plan with that in mind.

You can use other races as training and still race hard, as lang as you give yourself taper time before your 'A' race.

As far as sprint races you don't really need too much taper or recovery time.

Sounds like I am doing the right thing. I am treating the sprints as training and doing some light taper for them but not interrupting my HIM training. So far the Sprints are where I hone certain skills or try new transition techniques. They are also great because it breaks up my training week in and week out and gives me a way to gauge how my training has been going in certain areas.

Thanks for the input..

That and sprint tris are a lot of fun and they keep you motivated.

Good luck
