Ironman Germany 2009 is open for registration
That would be cool to do but doing a domestic IM event would be over my budget right now let alone traveling to Europe.
Maybe I'll win the lottery soon!!

Yeah, the 400 EUR for entry alone is over $600 bucks. Maybe if I sell my bike I could enter. Getting there, staying somewhere, and eating would be at least another $2-3 K. Maybe after the kids are out of college (only 20 years from now).

I am going in a few days and the timing is awesome! Ironman, Tour de France, and Festival de San Fermin (aka Running of the Bulls) in Pamplona are during the same week in 2008 and 2009. Yes, I'm doing all three this year. I've spent $2750 ($500 on registration, $1500 on flight, $750 on trains) and haven't even left the country yet, so food, hotels, and booze are yet to come. :(
10 days and counting . . .
Wow... TriSooner you are gonna have to put together a highly detailed and thorough walk through of the time you there. Sounds like it's going to be aweXome. Q: if you don't have a sherpa, who do you have coming with you?
Weary is the path that does not challenge.

+1
Your race report needs to be more like a race + vacation report!
Good luck and take lots of pictures.

I race Ironman Sunday, take a train to Chateauroux during the week, watch the Tour, take a train to Pamplona, run with bulls, fly home from Barcelona. I have a hotel the three nights in Frankfurt, but other than that, I have a backpack and some Euros. Everything is booked (planes and trains), so I'm just showin' up saying, "Here we are now, entertain us." I am travelling alone. I speak no German, high school-quality French from 17 years ago, and functional Mexican Spanish I've learned from living in Texas. I've kept a journal and expcet to write extensively for the 10-day or so trip. Many pics, too.
That's the best way to do it, enjoy.
I did IM 70.3 Pucon earlier this year. I didn't do any planning besides getting a plane ticket. EST had booked my room. I showed up down there, un-packed and got ready for the race 2 days prior. After the race I went on a whirlwind of mini adventures, from going to the post race party till 3:30 AM, then getting up 2 hours later to go climb the 9,000+ active volcano, then after dinner we hit the thermal mineral spas and got home at 2:30 AM. Did river rafting the next morning day and a run. Did canyoning after that and then a nice bike ride out to another city. Rested the following day and came back home... It was a blast!

I know y'all with kids say they are the greatest thing and you wouldn't want it any other way... BUT those of us with out them can just get up and do stuff like this. Its nice really. I am trying to figure out which international IM I would like---France, Germany or Austria. France is early in the season, but I LOVE Nice so that may have to be it.
Anyone out there done France? I know its hilly, but so was IMC.
Good Luck TriSonner!
If I get my choice I will be doing Germany in 2010 with wife and kids while I am on assignment for three years in Germany 2010,11, and 12. So it is possible to do the German thing with kidlets, just get on with an international company. Also hopefully by 2011 I will be ready for an IM. Doing my first sprint this fall followed by and Oly in october.
By the way no German is no problem, I haven't made it to to many bars or other areas where they do not speak english. Now in France they will speak english but won't admit it.
Congrats and best of luck sounds like a great time.

This year’s Ironman European Championship / Ironman Germany is still 10 days out but registration for this popular European Ironman event will open early for next year race.
Because of the tremendous demand during the past years and also to give those athletes who will leave for holidays after this year´s race a chance to register early.
Next year’s Ironman Germany triathlon is scheduled to take place on July 5, 2009. Registration will open tomorrow June 25, 2008 at 10 AM Frankfurt time (4 AM EDT, 1 AM PDT).
