100K race start changed to 2:00pm...????
Dayng... well, I'd imagine them people running the 100miler won't notice except for maybe the better pace of the 100k peeps. That might help them out a bit, more people to run with.
Weary is the path that does not challenge.
At least you get to sleep in now. :)
It seems like a cool idea to have the groups be able to run together, but the start time is a little weird to me, you could accomplish the same thing with much earlier start times, which I prefer.
If I read it correctly, everyone will be dodging the bullets from the horses.
It might work out since you get additional rest and it should give you a lot of your running time in the cooler hours and at night.
Nothing to it, but to do it
PROS: My biggest worry WAS running all alone for 62 miles...and the RD does indeed stick to this change, that worry will be no longer a problem. The extra sleep will be very nice of course. And honestly, I like running in the dark. The heat won't be much of a problem...its in Vermont (as opposed to Florida) and there won't be any sun to contend with at midnight.
CONS: My new worry is about nutrition. I've had such stomach problems in the past, that now I never eat the morning of a race (or I drink Sustained Energy 4 hours before), and start fueling within 15 minutes (or after the swim). Balancing food intake that morning will freak me out. I cannot run on a full stomach, yet I'm always hungry during waking hours :) Plus, running in the dark will (I think) make for a slower run. My husband/crew isn't too happy about being awake 24 hours either!
This oughta be interesting...

Either way it will be an awesome experience... I can't wait to hear about it! :)

Well, apparently the RD got enough negative feedback to change the start time to 4:00am with the 100-milers. Man that's early, but at least for the first 47.2 miles I'll have someone to run with. Those last 14.8miles may be a little lonely, but I think its better than running 47.2 miles alone, then possibly finding someone out there to finish up with (which was the initial plan before the 2:00pm change).
Everyone is happy and now we can focus on our last long run and taper!

I was thinking..."Cool! a Night run! Get a good head lamp!"
Don't whine about the 4 am start...you won't be sleeping anyway! ;)

Unfortunately heat could be a big problem..just a few years ago temps hit 100 degrees at VT and the drop rate was huge. Be ready for anything, Star. 62 is far and ANYTHING might come your way.
Ultras are not tri's as you well know by now...lonely comes with the territory. At least you won't be lonely in the dark!
Keep us posted on how the long run goes this weekend...

Ooooh yes. I'm ready to stop getting up at 3:45AM on the weekends. I'm ready to stop running for 7 hours at a time. I'm ready to get out of the heat! (OK, enough complaining!). I AM ready to run 100K. I AM ready to feel the pain. I AM ready to reach my goal :)
Thank you for your support and encouragement....

The Vermont 100-mile and 100K run is three weeks away, and yesterday we received the following from the RD:
Dear 2008 VT 100 K runners,
Being the participants in the very first VT 100 K race makes all of you members of a very special group. As this is the first time in our 20 year history that the VT 100 has added a new feature to the event, we have spent a great deal of time trying to make as great an experience as the 100 mile race has been to the hundreds of runners who have experienced it.
In an effort to make the first VT 100 K truly a part of the VT experience we have made a change to the schedule of the 100 K. Rather than start and finish separately (at 5:30 AM and 1:30 AM) the 100 K will start at 2 PM on Saturday with the 50-mile horses and finish with the 100-mile runners at 10 AM on Sunday. After 5.8 miles the 100 k course will join the 100-mile course at their mile 43.5 and run with them to the finish. This allows you to run with both the horses and the 100-mile runners and finish with some of both groups.
We hope that you regard this change as good news although we apologize for doing it with short notice. If this change causes problems for any of you please let me know. We are all excited about the first major change to the VT 100 and look forward to meeting you, the first VT 100 K runners.
Any thoughts???
