Hi All,

This past Sunday I competed in my first sprint tri and now have a little issue. My bike shoes now smell something like dead fish. It was not my first time biking barefoot or anything. In fact, I've never had a problem with smelly shoes at all (even after a few years of distance running). I think maybe the lake water had something to do with it. I took out the insoles to let them air out a couple days in the garage, but they still reek! Any tips?? Can bike shoes be washed? They are Louis Garneau carbon Tri Airs if that matters at all. Thanks!

Chris

Have you tried baking soda? You can sprinkle it into your shoes and let it sit for a day or two (do this with dry shoes) then shake it out...it's worth a try (and cheap).

Thanks, I'm going to try this. I race sockless and that makes my shoes disgusting!

Take pride in your stinky cycling shoes! I am a barefooter too and can clear a room when i break out my shoes.

Well I've got the baking soda stewing already. Definitely worth a tri (pun). Otherwise they may have earned their own quarters in the garage.

I do have trouble washing cycling shoes after a great race or TT. Do not want all the good mojo to wash off. However, my wife may have gotten tired of the smell and washed them...I think she uses the Techical Sport Detergent in the orange bottle. They are the T1 Sidi and (knock on wood) have had no issues. After the wash, I leave them in the Houston sun for the afternoon. They smell great afterwards.

You can take out the insoles and hand wash them and give your shoes a good rinsing in cool to lukewarm water. Wipe dry with a towel and stuff them with newspapers and let air dry.

When they are dry do the baking soda trick.

Not perfect but better.

Try Gold Bond Foot powder - I have found it kills the worst of odors in my running and cycling shoes. As for the sports detergents Win and Penguin. I now have Win and I don't think it works as good as Penguin Wash. That is amazing stuff for when your workout clothes develop that permanent smell desptite normal washing. I don't mind offedning others but when I begin to offend myself...
